RSHP's plans to redevelop the gasworks will include preserving and refurbishing the Grade II-listed gas holder frames, which date back to the 1870s, and building residential buildings within and around them. This development will create an estimated 2,200 new homes. The substructure of one of the gas holders will be reused as a community hub with space that is connected to a park by pedestrian and cycle paths. The redevelopment, which was approved by the London Borough of Newham's Strategic Development Committee, will reopen the site the the public after being inaccessible for 150 years. Construction is planned to start in 2025. #kudos to the project team: Architect: RSHP Structural and MEP engineering: Ramboll Landscape architect: Gillespies Planning consultants: Quod

Recent 'airspace' project, completed early 2023, modular construction..... Norman House - Sutton Housing Society The new Norman House ‘airspace’ extension is of modular construction. Design consultants & contractors were procured traditionally under NEC forms of contract. For more discussion on best value construction / procurement / contract routes, please view my profile. There is significant ‘value’ to be obtained from rooftop or airspace developments on buildings / land that you already own, transforming the existing building and ‘offer’, increasing site density and creating new homes for later living / future proofing the existing scheme for both existing and new residents - All to the highest modern standards. These projects also create the opportunity for retrofit 'mini-projects' involving new improved windows, generally improved thermal performance of the building 'envelope', solar panels, pv panels, air source heat pumps (ASHPs) and mechanical ventilation heat recovery (MVHR) etcetera. #SHS #ArkonAssociates #EliteDesigners #EdwardPearce #NeilWood #NECProjectManagementAirspace #NEC3CostManagementAirspace #ASHPThermalPerformanceMVHR #AffordableSocialHousingDevelopment #UKHousing

Energy evaluation is an important factor in the design of a building. It affects its energy efficiency, comfort, durability, and sustainability. It’s important however, to optimize the building performance in the early stages of the design, while the project is still flexible. Building design elements, such as orientation, window placement, and shading can be decided based on the results of an energy evaluation. Additionally, energy evaluation can help architects convince the client about their design. By demonstrating the energy efficiency and sustainability of the work, the architect can show the client the long-term cost savings and environmental benefits that come with the design. CADcentre is inviting Andy Thomson, Architect OAA and principal at Thomson Architecture, to discuss the topic of energy evaluation and how you can harness the tools within Archicad. Through his practice at Thomson Architecture, Andy has been applying his expertise in Net Zero, Zero Carbon, Regenerative and Passive House design since 1997. Learning Objectives: - Reasons to look closely at energy efficiency early in the design - How to setup the model for energy evaluation - Doing an Energy Model Review - Editing project and comparing results - Doing thermal bridging studies - Q&A Solutions used: Archicad #energyevaluation #energyefficiency #cadcentresolutions #archicadusers

“Embodied Carbon in Residential Structures – A Toronto based case study” by authors RJC Engineers and BDP Quadrangle is now available. bit.ly/45VgGhV The case study looks at four current projects in the Greater Toronto Area. The structural and architectural teams for each project calculated the embodied carbon of the structure and substructure. The focus was on the structure and substructure as together they account for 40 – 70% of the overall embodied carbon of a building. The purpose of the study is to inform policy makers, industry professionals, citizens, and any other relevant or interested stakeholders, of the issues which need to be addressed and the background information to make educated decisions to impact meaningful change. Read the full report: bit.ly/45VgGhV Thank you to everyone who contributed: Authors: RJC Engineers (Dominic Mattman, Ghazal Sonboli, Daniel Pekar, Duncan Rowe) BDP Quadrangle (Michelle Xuereb, Ryan Bruer) Contributors: Entuitive (Emily King, Oscar Valdes) Jablonsky, Ast and Partners (Kevin Deonaraine, Jeff Watson) Honeycomb (Mac Alsamadi, Anthony Mirvish) #embodiedcarbon #residentialstructures #rjcengineers #engineering #casestudy

How is the selection of #MEP systems for #EnergyEfficiency and #electrification the keys to low-carbon transition, along with selecting low-GWP refrigerants? While the #EmbodiedCarbon of MEP systems can be elusive, comprehensive carbon analysis comparing energy use carbon against the embodied carbon of envelope and MEP systems is just becoming possible by using #TM65 analysis. Southend Lane Stage 1A is complete! In collaboration with our esteemed client Goodman, we've embarked on a journey of sustainability and innovation, pioneering the use of recycled materials and adaptive reuse strategies. We are targeting to achieve a prestigious 5-star Green Star Buildings rating and a carbon-neutral footprint. Southend Lane, a testament to our commitment, stands tall as a beacon of adaptive reuse, preserving its original red brickwork and unique Y-frame structural spine. But our journey wasn't without challenges. Navigating the intricacies of this 50-year-old structure within a live environment housing existing tenants required agility and expertise. Yet, with determination and our agile approach, we've transformed a 20,000m2 facility in South Sydney into nine pristine industrial spaces. This project wasn't just about constructing buildings; it's about revitalizing communities. Through intelligent repurposing, we're not only minimising waste but breathing new life into cherished assets. Join us in celebrating this remarkable achievement, marking a significant step towards a more sustainable future. pre-cast and modular construction Structural Design Institute International Construction Consortium (Pvt) Ltd In many parts of the world there is a big demand for new housing. To meet the backlog, many countries have put together plans to build a big number of low cost or affordable housing units in a very short time. However, all those future housing units need to meet a range of different demands to be acceptable.

"Excited to share some insights on the key considerations in building construction today! 🏗️ In the world of civil engineering, constructing safe, sustainable, and efficient buildings is our prime goal. Here are a few factors that play a crucial role: ✔ Foundation design: Ensuring the foundation can support the building's weight and withstand environmental factors is paramount. From shallow foundations to piles and caissons, the choice depends on soil conditions. ✔Materials selection: Picking the right materials, like steel, concrete, or timber, impacts the building's strength, longevity, and environmental footprint. Sustainable options are increasingly important. ✔Structural design: Designing the load-bearing elements to withstand various forces (gravity, wind, seismic) requires careful engineering. The choice of structural systems, like frames or trusses, is key. ✔HVAC and MEP systems: Efficient heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing systems are vital for occupant comfort and energy efficiency. ✔Sustainability: Incorporating green building practices, such as LEED certification, to reduce the building's impact on the environment is a growing trend. ✔Project management: Effective project management ensures the construction process is timely and cost-efficient, reducing disruptions and delays. ✔Quality control and safety: Rigorous inspections and safety protocols are crucial to delivering a safe and durable structure. I'm currently working on a project where we're implementing these principles to create a sustainable and resilient building that will serve the community for decades to come. Stay tuned for updates on our progress! #CivilEngineering #BuildingConstruction #Sustainability #EngineeringInsights"
