Many of my clients sooner or later ask me to help them hire a salesperson. In some cases better marketing would increase results many times what a new salesperson would, at a fraction of the cost. In 2023, where does sales end and marketing begin? For any salesperson, being able to make a case in writing is essential, as is written follow-up, but when does sending emails stop being sales? How many business owners could make more money and reduce their hours in the business by hiring a sales assistant and taking their marketing to the next level? (Rather than hiring an additional salesperson). I would be very interested to hear different views on this.

Requirements Strong Business Acumen: This person should possess strong business drivers and perspectives combined with a deep understanding of the digital ecosystem (Media & Tech) and commercial skills, and an ability to bring a strategic focus to the revenue/sales, and be capable of adding value to the business. Worked in digital sales with Strong Client and Advertising agency relationships Strategic Thinking: Must be well aligned with the company's strategic goals and objectives. Must be hands-on and analytical with the ability to track, measure, and evaluate the financial divisions Dedication to Excellence: A passion for winning and achieving results beyond expectations, with strong professionalism, integrity, and team collaboration. I've spent a good bit of time with tech AEs (the sales kind not the agency account exec kind) and sales leaders but this is the first time we've looked to hire one! Selling Enterprise Saas and specialist agency services might feel like very different things but they're surprisingly similar. - You need a great product that customers love (check). - You need brilliant marketing air cover (check - although this is most of what we do at Atomic so if we didn't do this right there would be something seriously wrong). - You need to be set up for success (check - the whole business will be supporting to make the AE smash their targets). As an SMB we might not fly you to Hawaii for SKO but there are lots of other benefits to being a key part of a tight ambitious team that has big growth aspirations (and sharing in that journey). "Why don't you hire a salesperson?" I get that question a lot. Sales practices for boutique agencies are often founder-led (or someone that's a partner if not the founder). Why has that been working for us rather than building out a more traditional sales team? Brands look for the participant in the sales conversation to have an entirely different knowledge base/skillset than in the past. What used to be perhaps 20 minute intro calls to close a new client is now 2 months of 4 calls, an audit, questions back and forth over 20-30 emails, etc. (And, yes, I'm still "allergic" to free work). It's deep-dives into process and recommendations based on that brand's current state. Founder-led (in my case) continues to work because training someone up to the level of experience that can keep a certain "flow" to a conversation is near impossible. What can't you replicate? The experience that comes with: - Thousands (literally) of sales discussions over the last 10 years - Hundreds of client accounts worked on across multiple services - Growing my own brand - Working for a brand with near full-autonomy to make anything we wanted happen from a digital marketing perspective. Maybe I shouldn't say impossible. It is possible. But it's expensive. Up to this point I've chosen to be the "funnel" to win new work and rely on a process we've established with my team to deliver on that work. Is not hiring a seasoned salesperson limiting me in my day-to-day from growing the business further? To some degree, yes probably. I have to always ask myself if the cost of hiring a salesperson may allow the business to grow to an even greater degree. Overall, this path has been working for us. But, I'm super curious to get someone's take that is in more of a sales role.

Being a media rep is a fascinating, challenging gig. You’re in B2B sales but you’re charged with coming up with (mostly) B2C marketing solutions. Therefore, you need a mix of killer C-Suite/Agency/Biz Owner sales chops and savvy consumer marketing skills. Right brain. Left brain. Heck, all brain, all the time. You need to be both a slayer and savant: The discipline to be constantly prospecting...with a tenacity to be constantly closing. But also…the creativity and courage...of an artist. Not to mention you’re selling something that even the best prospects aren’t sure they want or need, which can actually lead to the most fulfilling part of the gig - even more than that commission you earn - when the solution YOU create...crushes. If you know a successful media sales rep, you should also know you’re in the presence of a business unicorn. So give ‘em a hand, or at least a thumbs up, and maybe even a hug (it can be a slog out there)! 🦄👏👍 🤗

Hire An Agency Or Build Your Own Sales Team? Let's talk about it. In the Canadian cannabis industry, marketing agencies are essential for aiding smaller Licensed Producers (LPs) and brands in promoting their products. Unfortunately, the current agency model is flawed, leading to the shutdown of numerous agencies in recent times. I have had many discussions with various LPs revolve around the dilemma of choosing between hiring a marketing agency or establishing an in-house sales team. This decision is challenging; creating an effective sales team is costly, and many companies lack the resources to do so. However, these companies also report unsatisfactory outcomes from previous engagements with marketing agencies. This leaves businesses in a difficult position, pondering their next move. If they can’t afford to build their own team, they have to continue using an agency over fear of losing market share. I see an opportunity for innovative thinkers and new companies to emerge in this space. They need to reinvent the agency model. A new model that produces results for their clients. Keep an eye on LinkedIn, in the coming weeks you will see some hiring posts from a new marketing agency.

There are some interesting thoughts in the comments. Most of what I’m seeing and hearing is that an LP takes their hands off the wheel and expects the sales agency to do everything for them. I also see that without proper support from the LP, the agency can only do so much (or so little). Limited budget means limited reach and limited effectiveness. No budget means no reach and no effectiveness. Gotta keep the lights on first, but there’s gotta be a some left in the kitty for the agents that are representing your brand. The sales force is essentially doing all the legwork to get dedicated sku penetration and sales velocity. Keep them happy and give them tools.
