If you simply ask a potential customer how they make decisions, they’ll confidently give misleading answers. Not intentionally misleading. But dangerously over-simplified. Teresa Torres has a great anecdote about this happening here. (She also has a great tip for helping interviewees slow down and dig up fuller answers: get them to first explain where they were when they last made this kind of decision.)

Sell First, or Build First? This is one of the early decisions startups need to make, but I often see conflicting advice on it. I dig in to this choice, and implications it can have for how you build a business. https://lnkd.in/gYAfRtFu

Congratulations to Nick Wilkinson on taking the helm as Managing Director of Steamclock. He's been working up to this for some time now, so it feels great to make it official. 🎉
I’m elated to share that I’ve been promoted to Managing Director at Steamclock Software! 😊 🕺 This is a change that’s been in the works for a little while now, and I’m extremely grateful to Allen Pike, Nigel Brooke, and Jenn Cooper for their support in helping me get here. I’m really happy that I’ll get to keep working with Allen and Jenn in their roles on Steamclock’s board, and I can’t wait to help share more about what’s next for them later this year. Most of all, I’m excited about what Nigel (our CTO) and I will build as we continue to write this new chapter at Steamclock. With our new leadership structure officially in place, Steamclock’s going to keep focussing on what we do best: making great mobile apps that people love using. 🚀 Read more about our leadership update here: https://lnkd.in/epq3teKC

Take every chance you can to learn from people you respect. Yesterday I got to interview Dennis Pilarinos, Lynsey Thornton, and David Hariri about how they've found product-market fit and grown great product teams. Beforehand I pondered: What should I ask? These folks have way more than 45 minutes of lessons learned and useful tactics they could share. So I took the path of asking them what I wanted to know. Under the framing of a story – from founding a product, finding PMF, to scaling up a team – I asked them things I myself am curious about when it comes to building and growing products. I learned a lot, and the audience seemed to dig it too. I think it worked a lot better than if I'd just stuck to the questions I was "supposed to" ask. Thanks to them for joining me, and the INNOVATEwest team for inviting me to put this together in the first place. ⭐️

Loved this bit from James Clift about how to spend your time at the earliest stages of a startup: strict focus on the most important things (writing code and talking to users) and making sure you're rigorously testing the market demand for your idea before you go full-tilt.
