A bad habit I had to un-learn before I could succeed in my freelance career. . . > Undercharging content writing projects in the hope of attracting more clients. That was me not too long ago. I was chasing clients, undercharging just to secure projects, and ultimately burning out. I ended up: > overwhelmed > Not investing time in research > delivering subpar content One thing I realized the majority of my clients had in common: > Urge to get a lot done on a low-budget > Zero interest in being unique (they were okay with provided content to "duplicate" or just "write in a better way" > Their strategy? Mix and match top-ranking content to produce their own The approach was flawed. I had to take a bold step. Finally, I let go of clients who didn't value quality and focused on only working with those who understood the importance of diving deep when it comes to content. It was a leap of faith. I was earning less in the beginning But, the word spread. One referral after another. Soon I was working with satisfied clients who recognized and valued the quality of my work. Key takeaways: 1. Every 3 to 5 months I crawl out of my cave to publish content tips here and then wonder why I bothered. Is this just me? I'm not sure why I'm sharing this. Maybe I want to know what drives other people like me who aren't freelancers or CEOs to post. When I started in my career and freelanced, I was big on growing my social media to build my brand and get clients. But now that I've been employed for the last 4+ years, I don't have the following: ⚡️ A strong reason to make time to document and share ⚡️ Clarity on who I'd want to reach and why I don't want to freelance and I'm happy in my job. I'm a creator at heart so I do have a creative itch to scratch which is why I come back. But that hasn't proven to be a strong enough reason for me to carve out time. I don't give a shit about motivation. It's fickle. It's having a good reason to guide my efforts that I'm curious about. Mid content piece I find myself wondering who am I writing this for? Does there need to be someone else in mind? Am I wasting my time creating content about anything I want for my own pleasure? Maybe I finish the piece. Maybe I publish it. Maybe I delete it. When I browse my feed, it all feels overly perfect. Don't get me wrong, there is some great stuff too! But when I see the people making it on here I wonder why do they post? Will I ever feel again whatever they might be feeling to want to do the same or is the desire gone forever? I'm so inactive here likely nobody will see this. But if anyone sees and cares about publishing their own original content, could you share what drives you and what do you hope to achieve if you're not publishing to grow your own business?

Getting an email from the The Freelance Coalition For Developing Countries that I was selected to be paired with a mentor was the best news I received in September this year. My joy became even fuller as the weeks went by, when I started the weekly sessions with Tawni Sattler. Our first call was focused on getting clarity on what I was looking to get from the mentorship. This set the stage right for us, and over the course of 3 months, (originally supposed to be 2 months- we were having so much fun and lost track of time), we delved into the following: 1. How to build a content strategy + built a sample strategy. 2. An indepth review of some of my works. 3. Keyword research and On-page optimization tactics 4. How to provide value in every content piece by prioritizing users' needs first. Tawni also gave me stellar advice on how to succeed as a freelancer and other key skills to pick up to excel in my career. "Aditi, I know I'm taking a bet on you but my gut says that it's worth it!" These were the words of my 1st client when he gave me the blog-writing project for his startup. Even though I didn't have - work portfolio - pricing knowledge - understanding of the freelancing space He didn't hesitate to take a chance on me. Why? Because sometimes, the faith in your words that follow the action is powerful. During our call, - I was nervous on the inside (which makes sense as it was my first sales call) but didn't allow it to affect my pitch. I confidently explained to him the strategy & framework that I would incorporate to deliver quality work. - I demonstrated my passion for writing and my willingness to learn and grow as a freelancer. - I was honest about my limitations and was open to feedback. And you know what? That was enough for him to trust me and give me the opportunity. In my 3.5 years of freelance writing, I've experienced situations I could've never anticipated. 🫠 Here are 3 you can expect in this downright bizarre career field: 1. The client pays you…but then never gives you what you need to start. You need your client for edits and other assets. Period. But sometimes they never get back to you (no matter how much you ping them). Lesson: Have a kill fee or a clause requiring full payment – especially if the client doesn't provide the necessary assets to help you do the job. 2. The client loves your work…but never uses it. You’re stoked to add a fancy byline to your website, only for your work to never see the light of day. Lesson: Always save your own work on Google Drive. 3. The client excitedly plans a lofty content strategy…and it never happens. The client schedules weekly meetings, asks you to take on additional work, and invites you to Asana and Notion. But after a few months, nothing pans out. 🚨 Side Note: This is especially common with startup-ups. They *think* they want content marketing, but have 5213 other priorities. Lesson: Be wary of newer companies promising "lots of work coming up!" but are giving disorganized energy. I'm sure I'm not the only one with weird experiences in this field 🙃
