Why is it hard to ask for help? This has been a topic that’s come up in a myriad of ways recently – in coaching sessions, with my teenage sons, and personally. When you’re starting a new role or planning for a future transition/promotion, help can be invaluable. Yet, sometimes we know others may be able to help us but we put off asking them – maybe it feels uncomfortable or presumptuous. We can ask ourselves a myriad of questions - what if they’re really busy, what if they think it’s weird, why would they want to help, what if they think I’m not capable… A question to consider pondering here is how you feel if someone asks you for help. I suspect the answer is typically flattered, happy to help, and delighted to be able to share your expertise/knowledge/contacts. If you are crazy busy, maybe you simply just delay replying, point them in another direction, or say sorry, not right now. #careerjourney #leadershiptransition

🎶 All of these lines across my face Tell you the story of who I am So many stories of where I've been And how I got to where I am 🎶 One of the most enlightening things I have learned over the past few years is this: The meaning we place on everything directly correlates to the quality of life we live. The meaning is what determines our emotions, our thought patterns and whether or not we take the action or not. The story we tell ourselves is the most important story we have. The question is what is the story you tell yourself? Where does it originate from and is the context(meaning/perspective) correct? In life we have a tendency to fix the wrong things for the wrong reasons, I have a lot of experiences in this exercise. The first week (actually first 10 days) of March is a very significant week in my life. It is a week of reflection because 12 years ago the first week of March completely altered the trajectory of my life. And in 2023, I decided to do a root cause analysis of my "story" and I completely changed the trajectory of my life once again. So join me in a very vulnerable week of content on how I recognized the story of my life, created and narrated by me, no longer served me. And the efforts I took to change the narrative by root cause analysis and taking uncomfortable action to become a stronger more confident version of me. Every step I took was found in business books and personal development books. Personal growth and professional growth are directly correlated. Interesting isn't it!! "Your life is no more than the sum of what you gave your attention to." - John Mark Comer We can be so obsessed with our outputs (productivity, sales, reports, results) that we forsake the inputs that inevitably impact our outputs. To change our outputs, we must first change that which we are inputting into our minds and our daily schedules. The average individual checks their phone 144 times per day, spends over 7 hours on a screen, and has not finished a book since graduating college (78% of individuals, in fact). If we want to change our lives, we must change what we are giving our attention to. If our mind shapes the trajectory of our character, then we must renew our minds instead of paralyzing them through mindless activities. A recent graduate of an LMI program set a goal of locking his phone up for the first 45 minutes of every hour, then pulling it out for the last 15 minutes to train his brain that it was not needed to have it in sight. He quickly came to find that he would not pull the phone out after 45 minutes. His productivity increased, and his results increased exponentially. Had he simply focused on the results, nothing would have changed. By changing the inputs (locking up his phone), he was able to naturally trend towards effective activities. He then implemented this practice at home. He noted that his marriage had gotten significantly better and time with his children increased as well. He was full of joy! When was the last time you changed your mind? We tend to expect ourselves (and others) to hold on to our point of views ‘Foreva Eva’. Just think about it. What would you say about a boss that changes their mind? What do you think other people would say if you gave a different opinion to the one you shared just yesterday? What would you tell yourself if you no longer believed what you thought you believed about a subject? Yet we should all be in the business of changing our minds. It shows: 1️⃣ We are open to learning even if it doesn’t support our previous ideas. 2️⃣ We are confident enough to say we were wrong. 3️⃣ We are flexible in our thinking and open to different answers than we originally thought. In a world where we never really have all the information, we are allowed to change our perspective after learning more information. I wonder how much more empathy we’d see in our world if we allowed ourselves (and others) to change our minds. #Questions #Open #Growth #Learning #Curious

How not to doubt your decisions? Our whole life is a series of decision-making. Each of us faces difficulties in making choices, fearing to make a mistake. And the most important thing is that when we make a decision, we often base it on the opinions of others: what will they think, what will they say, etc. You know, for some, a decision will be right, and for others - not. And every time you face a situation where you need to make a decision, you will have this hesitation. And the scariest thing is to start avoiding situations where decisions need to be made because it destroys you and your state of mind. When choosing between the decisions to jump from a high bridge into a river or not, few will hesitate. In this case, the instinct of self-preservation kicks in, and the basic decision to live, made long before the idea of jumping into the river was proposed, is activated. The difficulties of choice are related to the lack of basic decisions based on your own priorities, values, interests, and possibilities. In childhood, significant decisions are often made for us by adults, imposing their own vision of life and personal values. In adulthood, two elements often struggle inside a person: "I want" and "I have to", where the choice often shifts towards "I have to". And in those moments, a person loses confidence in decision-making due to the lack of a habit of choosing what is dictated by their personal values, as it would mean "betraying" those whose values they lived by before. Often people even intentionally look for someone to whom they could transfer responsibility for decision-making. All you need to do is hold a meeting with yourself and establish internal rules. 😊 Agree?)

Thought 15. Boy this one hit me like a ton of bricks and has been one of the hardest for me to shake. So often I would lean into the negative and take things so personal. Over the last 10-12 years this is one quote that sticks with me and it so important in my life. My intention is that when a circumstance happens (negative) I work on "what is it teaching me" vs "why is this happening". Again, the feeling doesn't go away yet the ability to step away from it and really work to understand it, has been powerful. Have you ever … ? Many of my mentees say they like to hear about challenges I’ve faced and how I addressed them. Warts and all. (Warts are good!).   They don’t want to be told what to do; nor to be told how.   They like stories of situations I’ve faced that might help with theirs.    They ask “have you ever…?”   And they like finding out why it was challenging. What did I do? Why? What other options did I consider? How did it make me feel? What would I do if I had my time again?   The stories provide illustrations and ideas that mentees can relate to their own situation. They like using the insights and our dialogue to develop their own thinking and to take decisions on things that matter to them.   I come to these conversations not knowing what’ll happen, but confident in the knowledge that I always leave feeling energised by the cool things my mentees are doing.   Thank you, Catriona Craig, Head of HR at Trojan Energy, for getting the week off to a flying start.   #Mentor #ExecutiveCoaching #SME
