Today's One Weird Trick for making a journalist's life easier: Horizontal photos. Most news sites require a horizontal image to use as a promo that appears on homepages and on social sites like LinkedIn. Having 2:1 ratio images that look good in these promo slots saves the journalist from having to make crops or adjustments to make it fit.

Yup. Horizontal photos and video will make the cut WAYYY before vertical any day… even if the content isn’t ideal, it makes the photo editor’s/producer’s job easier and they ain’t got time to f%ck around…

There's a really good principle here. Reporters and editors are over busy and overworked. Make it as easy as you possibly can for them to publish your story. That means quick access to well-briefed and articulate spokespeople, great art and video in the proper formats, concise, accurate details in plain English and, of course, a clear, compelling story.

Hallelujah, say it loud. I can't begin to count the number of times reps sent me tiny vertical photos or images with marketing writing and obvious watermarks. I was much more inclined to not follow up with those folks and instead chase a feature that already had usable visuals.

Just when I was giving up on my preference for horizontal images and adjusting to a world of vertical images you come along and tell me I can turn my camera back

Love this. It’s the small details that matter when it comes to making journos’ lives easier.

Times change. In Eyes of the Storm, Paul McCartney said The Beatles were posed like this all the time because editors didn't always have wider space and needed something that could fit in a single column.

Yes! Horizontal photos for PR purposes. So many people focus on vertical pics only due to how mobile phones are shaped. In my opinion.
