“Kiwi numbers in Whangārei Heads wouldn’t be anywhere near where they are without the support of volunteers.” Many kiwi conservation gains, and conservation gains generally, are thanks to volunteers' hard work and passion. This week is Te Wiki Tūao ā-Motu National Volunteer Week. We want to thank every volunteer who works tirelessly to protect not only kiwi but also the whole ngahere. When we all work together for the greater good of te taiao, we will see great results. Conservation groups around the country are crying out for more support from volunteers. Save the Kiwi strongly believes that conservation efforts need to be funded and workers need to be paid. However, the reality is that there is never enough money for conservation efforts. For this important work to still be carried out, volunteer efforts are essential. If you have any spare time, even just a few hours a month, please contact a conservation organisation in your region and offer to help where needed. We were not sure if we could actually get the weight of the skip contents for our World Oceans Day cleanup at Xemxija, so we estimated around a ton for the total. But we did in fact get the official weight from Veladrians Cleaning Services, and when all the official numbers we added up, we were amazed to see that we had actually removed a total of 2.25 tons of rubbish from Xemxija Bay. That is incredible! Once again, well done to everyone. What a great initiative from the Society for the Environment (SocEnv). Almost half of all life on this planet is in the soil and yet we hardly understand what’s going on - or what we are doing to it. Sustainability is rightly moving to the top of the agenda, but beyond that lies Regeneration, a space occupied by only the most forward leaning amongst us. I’m optimistic that in the years ahead the shift from ‘not getting worse’ to ‘always improving’ will take place (at least on some parts of the planet). Roll on.
