Recently we hosted our annual summer outings in both Philadelphia and Washington, DC. It was a great opportunity for colleagues to get together outside the office and enjoy the warm weather! These events are especially enjoyable as we are joined by our Summer Analysts, Summer Associates, and all our new full-time hires!

This summer we’re welcoming over 60 new associates and interns into Sixth Street. Here’s my advice: don’t be afraid to ask the “dumb” questions. Early in your career, this is one of the most important skills to learn. People think they need to fake it till they make it and pretend they know everything, when the truth is it’s exactly the opposite. If you don’t know something -- or maybe you know a little bit but you really want to be sure -- then the only way to learn about something is to ask. And if the person sitting across from you can’t explain what they know in a simple, clear way, it usually means they themselves don’t fully understand it. So ask the question. And when you do, don’t do it just to make your voice heard. Be authentic and an active listener so you can expand your knowledge base and intentionally build your skills toolkit. Your future self will thank you because getting good at asking those questions now will help you for the rest of your career.

This is a great example of inclusive organizational #leadership! While it’s not always possible to fly every FTE to every event, I applaud the 49ers for setting an example here — especially in the era of hyper-segmentation and favoritism amongst teams. Finding a way to acknowledge the contribution of all employees, whenever possible, goes a long way toward reducing silos, decreasing intra-office resentment, creating healthy workplace culture, and motivating folks to do their best work. #Superbowl #inclusion #culture #belonging

Here are some DO's and Dont's. ✅ Tailor your resume for specific job posting, highlighting your skills and experiences. ✅ Must add a career highlight section on the top with 2-3 bullet pointers positioning you for the job. ✅ Demonstrate a good fit to the organisation, go through the about section of the company and skim through for a better understanding . ✅ No Experience? no problem, showcase your projects and extra curricular activities (such as volunteering or certificate). ✅ Apply as soon as possible, resumes get screened on day to day basis. ❌ Dont just apply to all or any job postings, stick to a domain or an area of expertise i.e. Tech and Non-Tech roles. Our interns had a chance to ask a group of CHS leaders some questions at our headquarters in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., in a recent panel event. Mary Kaul-Hottinger, Gary Halvorson, Rick Dusek, and Brandon Smith met with summer interns, both in-person and virtually. The discussion covered a variety of topics including: setting career goals, receiving feedback, culture and employee retention and more. "Always be willing to change. Look at the possibilities.
