The end of the month can be chaotic for many D2C brands, and Naarica is no exception. Despite the sales shoot-up (End of the month phenomenon), fulfillment challenges, timely deliveries, and cash crunch are some of the hurdles we face. Amidst all this chaos, it's easy to let tracking and reflecting on performance take a backseat. But not for us, thanks to Shantanu Jain. After running and noting our numbers for the last month, we took away some key learnings. 💡 Firstly, optimizing for higher AOV is crucial. Excessive discounts to make volume sales might not always be the answer. Instead, patience and optimizing for increasing logistic costs and CAC can lead to better ROAS with slight or no discounts on the website. 💡 Secondly, don't ignore gross margins. While D2C brands with healthy gross margins may find it easy to ignore optimizing it, making efforts to aim for a 5% betterment in gross margins at scale levels can help tremendously. 💡 Lastly, the importance of RTO can't be stressed enough. Focusing on sales can often mislead founders and operators into ignoring RTOs. Our structural changes such as Risk Monitoring, Risk Scoring, and Order Confirmation checks have helped us bring our RTO to less than 8% in January 2024. Aim for a standing ovation every time you present your product. You never know what impact it could have. Early at Divvy from BILL, we met some potential partners and investors in Silicon Valley. Amex Ventures invited us to present to senior leadership at American Express to inform them of what we do and explore potential partnerships. To showcase our product's ability to facilitate spend quickly, we had the idea to showcase creating a new credit card for a user and making a purchase with the same card in the meeting. We started the meeting by providing the standard company overview and then began the brief demo. Alex created a card and provided it to me. I purchased some ice cream, and the Amex team saw the transaction go through in our app in real-time. There were some nods and acknowledgement that the speed to create and spend was interesting. We finished the rest of the presentation and started a Q&A. Up to this point, it was a standard presentation. As we answered the last question, I received a text that my order had arrived. I quickly ran outside the room to meet the delivery person with our ice cream from Cold Stone Creamery. Not only had the transaction on the new card gone through, but we had already received our order during a typical business presentation. As I walked into the room with the ice cream, we received a standing ovation from the Amex team. When we often demo our products to anyone (customers, partners, investors), we show the functionality but not the value. For us, the function was creating the card and attempting a purchase, but the end of the value cycle included benefiting from our product's functionality. During my tenure at Divvy from BILL, I often traveled to NYC to meet with leaders at Amex, and this story would come up frequently. Late last year, I connected with Lindsay, who initially invited us to that event, and she still remembered the impression we left. You never know how your creativity and extra effort could be rewarded and leave an impression. P.S. This is how Tyler introduced me to Birthday Cake remix.
