Why do PPOs (Preferred Provider Organization) represent better health coverage?   The PPO members (the providers, doctors, hospitals, clinics, etc.) provide overall flexibility. You can go to a specialist without being referred by a Primary Care Physician.  That’s critical in a case where a specialist is outside of the insurance company’s network, whether an EPO, HMO, or PPO.    PPO’s typically have slightly higher rates than HMOs. With the higher rate comes the benefit of having a greater number of providers with significant benefits and negotiated discounted rates.   The challenge remains that if one travels on vacation, personal, or business, how far reaching is the insurance company’s PPO network, a state, or group of counties, or nationwide? Many PPO plans are restricted to a geographic area, typically a state. Only a few networks are truly nationwide. Those are normally provided by employer coverage plans that operate across many states, and plans which are underwritten.     www.healthbyjohn.com
