February 22nd is National Walk Your Dog Day! So, in preparation for the big day, we gathered advice from several of our canine friends at Pals For Life on how to make it a great day.
First you must make sure that your human is on a strong leash. They can be easily distracted so you do not want them to escape or run into harm’s way.
You need to set the pace for your walk. Your human may want to hurry and get the walk over with quickly, but it is your job to make them walk at a pace that is comfortable to you both. Besides humans are always rushing through things and don’t take the time to admire their surroundings like dogs do.
Remind your human again to slow down by stopping to sniff everything. And we mean EVERYTHING! Be sure to check out every tree, lamppost, mailbox, fire hydrant … you get the idea.
While you are leaving your calling card, have your humans do so with other humans. Let wave hello to other neighbors or chat with other dog walkers. If they are lingering too long, just give them a little tug on the leash to move them along.
If you have trained your human properly, after you do your business, they will pick it up. How great is that? So, to reward them for a job well done, be sure to give your tail a few more wags or a lick of the hand is most appreciated.
