Its important to me as a #leader to add value— for the company, team, partners, vendors and customers.
And while I may not see that impact all the time… it’s little notes like this that show I did contribute and that others received something from it!
#influencingwaysofwork
So let's talk about that time I made a five-figure $$ "ooops".
I was in my first leadership role and had been there less than a year. I had just proposed the largest single IT project in the history of the company.
(Hey, can't say I'm afraid to go big, right?)
And I'd left a critical item out. A showstopper the vendor assumed we had and I missed when reviewing the agreements.
It was going to be another 5-figure add-on to the cost.
I went to the exec committee and let them know what had happened, heart racing, expecting all the bad things.
The managing partner looked at me and said, "So we can't move forward without this piece?"
-"No sir."
"OK."
"So, about the meeting with <client name> next week gents, any last-minute items to prepare? Oh, and thank you, Jon. Let us know when the project starts."
New leaders, what's the moral of this story?
Your mistakes will rarely, if ever, be as bad as you make them out to be in your own head.
Take the chance. Go for the project. Try the new thing.
And maybe double-check the agreements and statements of work one last time.

A little less “Channel Chief”, a little more TEAM CULTURE.
You’re going here, you’re going there. Networking, It’s fun. It’s also expensive. You have a budget for fun, does your team?
We have found a top reason MSP’s attend trade shows is to network, and spend time with people they don’t normally get to hang out with.
Vendors, this is a fantastic opportunity to get your team building those relationships.
Now let’s relate this back to company culture. If you as a business owner and leader, get to travel and do all the fun things, where does your team come in? Do you budget for them to help build the business in an enjoyable way?
Your team is the frontline of the business interacting with potential partners on a daily basis, they should lead your show presence.
It’s simple. Put your money where your team is.
Burnouts is tired of seeing just CEO’s having fun, we want to see your team! Happy Employees = Happy Customers.

Leaders: Here's how to master building vendor relationships for global success!
As a Service Delivery Manager, I once onboarded a global client needing six services across three countries with vendors in Canada, the US, and Mexico.
We started with personal meetings to build rapport and discuss mutual expectations.
This approach ensured clear communication and aligned goals, driving successful partnerships.

Passion is the most overlooked ingredient that drives businesses to become market leaders.
I’ve always believed that as our momentum grew at Klue, but couldn’t directly point to it.
That was until I started looking at buyer interviews more regularly.
I was reviewing a recent key win report in our win-loss program… and guess what I found?
“I trust the passion that Klue actually wants to build the best tool out there and be the market leader.”
This was one of their biggest decision-drivers the buyer had for selecting us over a competitor 👆
Buyers aren’t just selecting vendors on capabilities in that moment alone. They need to believe in your passion and vision that you’re building the strongest business in the market.
Otherwise they’re probably picking your competitor.

Why is this so important to us? Here are a few words from our CEO Dave Stevinson explaining the reasons why we decided to support this piece of work:
"Leadership is exceptionally challenging in the technology sector, whereby a rapid pace of innovation requires leaders to build ambitious growth strategies that in some cases goes beyond the seemingly possible. As valued analysts and partners within channel we find ourselves in the optimum position to watch leaders at work, and therefore have the unique opportunity to identify a 'once-in-a-lifetime' or 'iconic' leader.
As for our reasons for supporting this research, leadership development is becoming increasingly important within QBS, and I am hoping that we can learn from these findings. Our brand-new Learning Experience Platform – QBS Academy, has been launched to allow future leaders to live up to their potential and grow professionally and personally with our support."

People you look up to might not be what they project.
(reality is different from what you see)
In the last month, I had an opportunity to meet and network with a few “successful” people.
Some of them are very well known in their industry.
I have followed some of them on social media for many years and respect them a lot.
On the surface, they run successful businesses and lead a happy team with high profits.
On meeting them and some of their close network, I had a reality check.
When I went deep and understood them better.
Here is what I found:
- One hasn't paid salaries for 3 months.
- One trainer is unaware of industry leaders.
- One doesn't make full payments to vendors.
These are only the biggest findings.
Here are my learnings from these conversations:
1. Don't follow anyone blindly. Follow with a pinch of salt.
2. Don’t trust everything you see on social media.
3. No one has a perfect life or perfect business.
4. Everyone is fighting their own battles.
P.S. What was the shocking thing you learned about those you look up to?
