Despite significant progress, gender disparities persist with women being underrepresented in leadership roles and encountering barriers to career advancement. Additionally, despite the increased recognition of women's value to entrepreneurship, the funding landscape needs to be more balanced. In 2020, women-led startups received just 2.3% of VC funding, highlighting the need for greater support and investment in female entrepreneurs to close the funding gap. Ranked as the number two place in the country to start a business and recognized as the best place for women-led startups by Merchant Maverick, Colorado is paving the way for women in science to make significant contributions and realize their entrepreneurial aspirations. By creating a supportive environment that empowers women to succeed, Colorado is driving innovation and growth and setting an example for other states to follow. Over the last number of weeks, our days have been full of conversations with other women inventors. Here are the three most significant challenges we keep hearing over and over… 👉 Funding - women tend to ask for the smallest amount they think they’ll need. Both a strength and a weakness, I believe, because while women inventors tend to be good stewards of money, things always cost more than you think they will, leaving you in an exhausting place of continually having to go back to the well. 👉 Manufacturing - unfortunately it’s incredibly hard to find a manufacturer you can trust. It’s been our experience, and the experience of many other women we’ve talked with, that there is an understanding and respect given to men that is not typically afforded to women in this space. 👉 Marketing - whew, this is another incredibly challenging place to find people who actually deliver on their promises. How does an inventor best get their product out into the world without it costing an arm and a leg? And who can she trust to help her do that? stacey and I are on a mission to help these women… with our network, our experience, our resources, and our community. We’ve done (and continue to do) the hard work of vetting good people to work with, and love nothing more than to make introductions. Our newly formed BoldSKY Foundation will be a much needed lifeline and scaffolding to all female inventors as they build their dream. And since we know what it feels like to give away the farm, pay big fees, etc., boldSKY will be different. The first organization specifically created BY women inventors to offer help - funding, network, community, events, resources, etc. - TO women inventors. One of my favorite things? Seeing women uplifting other women. “This support is uniquely structured—it doesn’t involve surrendering rights, equity, or entail payback obligations. It’s designed to let these founders concentrate on their vision while securing essential initial funding to bridge pivotal startup needs. “I want to encourage these founders to use this money any way possible because that's how you learn and grow; hopefully their investments will pay off. Women founders continue to face significant challenges in securing funding, with data continuing to show a persistent gap in capital allocation for many years. Despite a few standout successes, the broader landscape remains challenging for women founders. The statistics speak volumes, with only a small fraction of capital going to female founded teams, from venture to PE to bank lending.
