✨ Alumni Spotlight ✨ Meet Jessica Skerlec (She/her) Where is your hometown and where are you located now? Raised in Kelowna and still currently living in Kelowna. What did you take at OC? What campus did you attend? I took my Bachelor’s of Business Administration at Okanagan College, specializing in Human Resources Management at the Kelowna Campus. What is your current position? Negotiator for the National Collective Bargaining Institute. Why did you choose your program at OC? How does it relate to what you’re doing now? I chose to complete my BBA at OC because of it’s outstanding reputation for producing qualified graduates and offering variety of specialized course offerings students are unable to find at other institutes and universities. What was one of your most meaningful memories during your time at OC? My most meaningful memory at OC was winning Gold at the 2023 Queen’s University Intercollegiate Business Case Competition in the Human Resources Stream. What do you think has been the biggest turning point for your career success? My biggest turning point was joining the OBSA executive team in my second year of studies, eventually becoming president of the association. Pursuing this allowed me to become more involved in the school outside of the classroom and expanding my network of connections, while creating opportunities to host meaningful events for the student body and further establish myself in the local business community. Are there any awards, achievements or activities that you would like to highlight? I.C.B.C. 2023 Human Resources Gold Medalist, 2023 HRC West Case Competition Competitor, President of the OBSA, Dean’s List Graduate. What advice would you pass on to current/future students? I strongly encourage all students to become involved at the College beyond their classrooms, as it creates valuable connections and opportunities with their peers, professors and faculty, and the local community. Whether it is competing in case competitions, joining associations or clubs, or simply attending networking and social events on and off campus, students become exposed to information and learnings that expand beyond their course material, and are able to truly create a meaningful brand for themselves. When you’re not working, what are you doing? When I’m not working, I’m always staying active playing soccer or spending time with my family and friends!

Let's talk about hidden challenges and how we overcome them. JCSU is a part of the very first Florida Beach Bowl. I let the Beach Bowl's marketing team know that I'd like our communication to be specific to JCSU and lead people to www.GoldenBullSports.com to purchase their tickets. After getting the OK to modify their materials, I reached out to resident hype man Ryan Thurman who graciously gave up his time to come to my office and record three different scripts for three separate videos that can be used to market the event. So how do we face hidden challenges? 1. Take initiative to overcome the challenges yourself. Don't wait for a magical cure or feel like you can't take action yourself. 2. Ask for help when you need it. 3. Invest time in your furthering your talents. You never know what talents you'll need to employ to overcome your challenges. 4. Become comfortable with the fact that the effort you put in won't always be seen for the labor of love that it was. 5. Build relationships with people who are willing to help in the midst of your challenges. I hope this helps anyone who is struggling to overcome hidden challenges in the workplace. If people ask me what have I learned in my 15+ years in corporate world, I would hold on to these as these are the same tips that I have always emphasized to my teens daughters, hoping that if they hold on to these, they are able to steer the life challenges ahead of them: 1. Do not be afraid to FAIL. Failure is not necessarily a mistake. The Big Mistake is being afraid to TRY at all. 2. It is OK not to be at the top (No 1, Top 3, Top 5, Top 10) but it is NOT OK to not make serious effort at all. 3. It is ok that you are lack of certain experience skills or knowledge, these gain be gained, but it is NOT OK to be rude, impolite & boastful as you will lose the respect of others. 4. You do not have to be part of the herd who is running towards the cliff, but you have to be one who is trusted by the herd so that they avoid the cliff. Again, if people ask me, I would preach the same things that I preached to my kids. - my first two (out of 5 girls), from 2 different schools, competing in WSC Regional

In a sector that has so many challenges, and at times feels like you are running in tar, it is important that we come together to celebrate the achievements. The wins are what keeps us going, what inspires us, what amazes us and shows why we do what we do. NCFE have been running our Aspiration Awards for a number of years now and they are a great opportunity to celebrate achievement. What I love about them is they don't just recognise someone who has got the highest qualification it recognises those who have overcome barriers to achieve their aims. For those who cannot take learning as a guarantee and is a struggle to accommodate for numerous reasons. Do you know a special someone in your centre, someone who has gone the extra mile, overcome huge barriers to achieve? Someone who is often the unsung hero but without them it just wouldn't work?
