The first post by Singapore’s President Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam. President Tharman has articulated what all Singaporeans want, and probably all humanity: 👨👩👧👦 Deeper and lasting culture of respect and dignity for all regardless of 🎓our educational levels, 🛠️the work that we do, 🛣️the paths that we take, 👨🦽 our disabilities or abilities, 👵🏽👶🏻 our age, 🧑🏻🦰🧔🏾♂️🧕🏽👦🏻our race, 🕌 ⛪️our faith, 🗣️ our views. Our education system is one important institution (but not the only one!) to nurture this culture and belief. Our public schools provide the common space for our children to learn, play and work alongside one another. And they form friendships for life due to their common experience in class, CCAs, camps, service and interest groups. Knowing friends from different backgrounds and networks shapes our thinking and gives us broader perspectives. We understand others better. We lead better in future. We are better colleagues, community volunteers and we are more cognisant and considerate. We have fewer blind spots. We will continue to tweak our school admission policies to balance parent/student choice, diversity in schools, our ability to resource schools to provide a range of programmes, and learning to be meaningful for the students. This is how we will strive to achieve our National Pledge. Thank you President Tharman Shanmugaratnam for role-modeling the way and putting out the beacon. Chair of Modern Languages, Associate Professor of Italian, and Director of Italian at The University of Dallas
The 2024 DFW Italian Festival is fast approaching, and to get you ready to experience authentic Italian culture, festival organizers wanted to suggest some Italian books to read. This is the fifth in a series of eight recommendations! Do you like political intrigue? If so, "Della dissimulazione onesta" (On the Honest Dissimulation) by Torquato Accetto is the perfect text for you. Accetto’s political treatise—which treats the necessity and virtue of concealing one’s true thoughts and emotions under certain conditions—is one of the most unique texts ever written. Conceived while under Spanish rule in Naples and published in 1641, Accetto’s work uses a medical language—full of “wounds” and “scars” and “exsanguination”—to make the reader understand that what he is reading is only ⅓ of the original text. As such, Accetto “sends” his readers to other texts in order to figure out exactly what he means to say. For example, he cites a passage from Dante that *seems* innocent, while depending on his readers to know the next few verses of the passage, one that excoriates political rulers. In another instance he cites Aristotle, but it is a passage in which Aristotle cites Homer, and so the real meaning lies in the Homeric text. Finally, there is the tantalizing theory that Torquato Accetto wants to "send" readers to another text entirely. Due to the language about "cutting" and "reducing", and since the treatise has 25 chapters, it has been argued that Accetto hints at a "missing" 26th chapter. It just so happens that Machiavelli's "The Prince" contains 26 chapters, and it is in that 26th chapter that the Florentine politician exhorts the Medici to "liberate Italy from the [foreign] barbarians" then occupying Italy! 🇮🇹DFW Italian Festival ⏰Saturday, October 12, noon to 9 p.m. 📍501 E. Las Colinas Blvd., Irving, TX ⌨️www.dfwitalianfestival.com #dfwitalianfestival #dfwitalians #italyintexas #texasinitaly #naples #napoli #politica #politics #italianliterature #letteraturaitaliana
