The theme of this Nurses Week is “Nurses Make a Difference!” Its motto, #NursesLightUpTheSky, honors their key role in helping to brighten patient lives. Nurses exemplify what it means to make a difference by triaging sensitive situations, collaborating across disciplines, seeing a person in context, and advocating for patient rights. When we or our loved ones are hurt or scared, a nurse's calm compassion can be a great source of solace. As the pandemic reshaped work, managers found themselves thrust into similar roles of emotional first responders, a role for which none of us were trained. Employee needs have only increased since then. Below, Angela Sigal Poock (who was one of the Harvard University Heroes in 2018) and I share how learning from nurses can remind managers of the key role they play in attempting to make a difference. We also share how to support these caregivers. Like managers, nurses are shock absorbers – pressured from the top by performance imperatives, challenged by turnover and understaffing, and affected by increasing human distress across all demographics. This is the future of training in healthcare. Augmented and virtual reality will assist in scaling. The technology that is out that is incredible in regards to measuring biofeedback, eye tracking technology. In my sector I know we will look at using it for situational awareness training, drill simulation and the much needed practice to learn the art of negotiation which is the one of the most valuable skills a professional nurse can learn in this climate.

Acute Care Academy: Carrie Kronberg/Tyler Niesen @St. Joseph's in Bellingham, WA Their transition program is structured around the nurse as: Clinician/Advocate/Leader/Educator/Collaborator/Innovator I liked the structure of their program - they have AC101 and AC102 courses, the content which has been built around a 'gap assessment' done with the residents. AC101 is primarily didactic followed by AC102 which is grounded in simulation based on the AC101 content. Sweet....attention to hands AND head. They meet with their grads weekly to see how things are going - this investment (which is see as a thread throughout ALL the programs involved in the ANCC Accreditation Programs) triangulates the graduates with managers, educators and preceptors - a well rounded TEAM approach to transition. What was most fascinating about this program was the 'bring it to the grads' approach of the transition coordinators - there are only 2 of them, but they rotate through all the hospital units where the residents are transitioning, bringing equipment TO the units to teach them skills in the nurses station. They spend an inordinate amount of time face-to-face with the grads (they call elbow to elbow support) and use ONE 12 hour shift/rotation to remove them from practice to provide theoretical support in the classroom - this allows them to come in relatively budget neutral. They suggest that the success with their program is because they 'get their scrubs on' and work at the bedside with the grads (this is on top of the preceptorial support the grads receive). Students worry naturally when their peers use other resources like Archer. Here’s the thing: adapt your studying to the study resource that fits your learning style best.
