I have a professional update to celebrate (and others to come!). I have been selected the 2024 Educator of the Year by the Minnesota State Board of Trustees. This is the highest honor award for excellence in teaching in the entire Minnesota State system. Only 4 are selected out of dozens of applications. I am grateful to have several mentors and inspiring students in my professional journey who motivated me to pursue better and more innovative ways to delivery my teaching and to connect students to more relatable experiences and real world examples with maintaining high academic rigor. Some of my innovations include mixing a traditional course on Labor Economics with a study abroad component, jigsaw activities to discussed peer-reviewed articles, simulations of immigration process experiences, Pre and Post Debates, self introductions in online courses with sharing gratitude and savoring experiences, and incorporating students to real data to analyze local issues. Further, my activities also include direct discussions on equity, disparities, implicit bias, and examples that demystify the economics profession. #IlookLikeAnEconomist

Literacy Leaders out here leading literacy! 

At Dixons, we have schools in Bradford, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool and we need to understand that disadvantage will manifest in different ways in these different contexts. Even if we look at Dixons McMillan Academy and Dixons Trinity Academy, which sit at different ends of the same street, there will be unique context-based challenges and solutions. We always ask ourselves the question: why do we exist? The answer is easy - to challenge educational and social disadvantage in the North. Learn how states are using Public School Strong to train tens of thousands of leaders and build teams of 3 or more leaders in every school district to engage in their local school board, help build statewide power to stop voucher expansion and use deep canvassing to promote, protect and strengthen public education.

At the start of the year, almost half of the third graders (43%) started the year with kindergarten-level phonics skills (3+ years below). At the end of the year 66% of 3rd graders had advanced one grade level or more. #structuredliteracy #reading #95percentgroup

This Children's Day, we want to highlight what our children currently miss out on while they learn at school. There are socioeconomic inequities in the public education system that limit a child's opportunity for learning and growth. The key reason why children's education and future are at risk is because the system is heavily burdened. There are numerous gaps that need to be addressed in professional development programs, and government systems and processes. Children deserve a stronger, agile public education system that equips them with the knowledge, skills, and mindsets required to have successful futures. At Leadership For Equity, we work every day in close collaboration with governments, leaders of the system, and teachers to empower them. These stakeholders can be the true architects of change who can lead our children to academic excellence. We truly believe that our public education system needs to be better for our children, and it can be better. Over the next week, we want to create conversations about what children need and how that can take us towards educational equity.
