This picture was taken at my white coat ceremony before beginning pharmacy school. Not too long ago that phones still had cameras but long enough that they weren’t good ones. It’s amazing just how unpredictable life is. At the very moment captured here, I had no idea how things would pan out personally nor professionally. Over the subsequent 12 years, I’ve worked in many healthcare settings with many different health disciplines, had job opportunities fall through, turned down multiple positions and endured some (many) difficult work days. I’ve been married (then divorced), met an incredible person who helped (and continues to) change my perspective on life, made great friends, lost good friends and had wonderful experiences that are uniquely my own. I left a “comfortable” job to pursue my calling, something that had been in the works but never received the push it needed until it happened. Today I’m proud to have started Apothicor Wellness, a company that uniquely integrates pharmacists into care teams on behalf of employers and their employees. I believe it is an opportunity to advance the profession and really emphasize our value with outcomes and financial savings data. 12 years ago, I couldn’t have told you any of what has happened, would happen. Friday Evening Fail! Failing to recognize gaps in your career. I do a fair bit of traveling for my current job. Sometimes traveling up to 2.5 hours one way to get to my clinic sites. I was recently asked why I don't take a similar position closer to home, even within McLaren Health Care. It's an interesting question, because there certainly are positions that are closer to my home. However after thinking quickly on the answer, I immediately went to what my current position has to offer. One is exposure to rural health clinics, which a closer-to-home position would not offer. Experience with rural health clinics is something I don't have a ton of experience with. Two is that I have never implemented an EHR system as they were all in place when I started at the various organizations I have worked at. While McLaren is largely Cerner Corporation based, two of my three markets are not on Cerner. So the opportunity to gain experience implementing an EHR is on the horizon for me. Third, I'm still fostering and building relationships within the markets I do serve, and hopefully, making a difference. In the end, I recognize there are gaps in my experience that I need to fill if I am going to strengthen the likelihood of getting to the next level. This week's FEF...we all have gaps within our career, whether that be within the position we currently hold or between your current position and the next level.
