May is Small Business Month! A recent survey by TD Bank showed that nine out of ten small business owners have a positive outlook about their prospects over the next 12 months, and nearly two-thirds (64%) of them anticipate they will have additional credit or financing needs over the next twelve months. For many of them, their local community banks are a crucial part of securing the funding they need. It's all about deposits!!   It didn’t surprise me that the primary topic at the Small Biz Banking Conference was deposit acquisition and the competition to find them. What surprised me? Nearly every session and speaker expressed how focused they are on acquiring diverse-owned small business deposits. Why? Because the growth of diverse-owned small businesses surpasses that of businesses that are Caucasian-owned. For example, Hispanics own more than 4.5 million businesses and employ over 2.9 million people. Three states — California, Texas and Florida — each had more than a half-million Hispanic-owned firms 20 years ago, and nearly double that now. California led the way with 815,304. Texas had 687,570 Hispanic-owned firms and Florida had 604,128 Hispanic-owned firms. 1️⃣ Do banks know how to reach these business owners in a meaningful way? 2️⃣ Do banks understand how to establish trust with these small business owners whose cultures traditionally avoided banks? 3️⃣ Do banks’ diverse-owned acquisition initiatives match how their frontline business bankers interact with small business owners, particularly Hispanic women? Looking for deposits? Anticipate the solutions these small businesses need from your bank. Prepare the resources that will help them build and grow their small business. Communicate these to your business bankers. Then deploy an effective customer acquisition strategy built on establishing trust to reach these small business owners and deliver deposits for your bank.
