If you would like to make a difference in our community, there are some actions you can take right now: 1. Learn: Where to find help and know the signs of domestic violence. Advocate: Call your MP and ask them to support Bill C-332, An Act to amend the Criminal Code which is scheduled for a second reading in the House of Commons in February. 3. Volunteer: Organizations in Calgary need volunteers to help keep shelters and programs running. Consider Discovery House or other organizations. 4. Donate: Contribute to Discovery House or another domestic violence organization so that families can access the support they need to live free of violence and abuse. If you or someone you know is living through domestic violence, please know that there are resources out there to help. In Alberta, you can call 211. More than 27 million people globally suffer the abhorrent abuse of human trafficking and forced labor, including hundreds of thousands within the U.S. Shockingly, 40% of trafficked children are sold by a family member, and 99% are never identified. Hello Members Monday! Where we raise awareness of the incredible work other organisations are carrying out against modern slavery. Today, we are shining a light on Unseen UK Unseen is working towards a world without slavery and provides safehouses and support in the community for survivors of human trafficking and other forms of modern slavery. The charity also runs the Modern Slavery & Exploitation Helpline and works with individuals, communities, businesses, governments, other charities, the NHS and statutory agencies such as the police to stamp out slavery for good. Unseen’s approach to fighting modern slavery is to tackle the symptoms as well as the causes of exploitation, and this means working closely with survivors to help them put their lives back together. Support can range from practical assistance, such as help to register with a doctor or navigate the health system, to group activities such as cooking, sports or wellbeing sessions. Unseen has supported more than 500 women, men and children in this way. Since Unseen’s Helpline was set up in 2016, it has received more than 40,000 contacts and identified over 27,000 potential victims of modern slavery. The Helpline provides help and advice to victims of exploitation as well as professionals and members of the public. Governments and other organisations use this unique, grassroots information to help inform strategies to tackle modern slavery. Worldwide, there are millions of adults and children trapped in forced labour in the operations and supply chains of businesses. So, companies, big and small, have an important part to play in ending modern slavery, and to this end, Unseen trains businesses on how to identify exploitation and advises them on how to address it.
