In my family medicine practice, nonadherence to statin medications is primarily due to a lack of health literacy. Pts don't have a clear understanding of why the medicine should be taken daily and the likely outcome if the medication(s) is not taken. Studies show that statins are one of the medications most likely not to be taken by patients. I spend time explaining and have notice compliance is better.

Great post! LDL cholesterol is the bad cholesterol; if not controlled it can cause various issues. The issues includes cardiovascular diseases like coronary artery disease, stroke, heart attack. The build up of plaque in the arteries can lead to blood insufficiency to other organs of the body which can be life threatening.

Great advice! ALL of these things have made a huge difference in my risk factors after having had two stents 3 months apart. I had no idea I was internally so unhealthy until I came so close to having a heart attack with extremely high LDL cholesterol and low HDL cholesterol. I am so blessed to have an exceptional cardiologist placing stents right & left sides of major blocked arteries in my heart, an aggressive medicine regimen, cardo rehab AND The LORD SAVING my life! at age 63! I’ve NEVER smoked or drank alcohol & had an active lifestyle until heart disease stopped me in my tracks! I knew of my horrific family genetics but never expected it to happen to me! I am blessed beyond measure & am now on a mission to a TOTAL healthy lifestyle & feeling 10-15 years younger having energy to enjoy an active life & hoping to be here to watch my grandchildren grow up & be a happy healthy part of their lives! Thank you AHA for promoting these life saving lifestyle changes & encouraging everyone to follow up with your health care team! ♥️♥️♥️

Per am article from Cleveland clinic...reducing ldl can reduce the likelihood of a 1st stroke or heart attack. It states too much LDL cholesterol in your body can raise your risk of heart disease and stroke. You can do a lot to bring your LDL level down if it's too high, like eating the right foods and keeping your body moving (exercise).

Remember: There is particle size to track. LDL-A and B are large and and mid-size. High numbers of these are like having high HDL. Only LDL-C numbers need really be worrisome. These are the small sized particles that get trapped in our blood vessels and start to form plaque.

I agree! The theme of this year’s Heart Ball. Knowing and understanding your numbers and the many ways they can have a negative affect on your entire body!
