Leading a team of designers, applied researchers and educators to build the future of learning and assessment.
GO #BRADLEY COOPER! GO PBS / WETA! At some point, we’ll all need care, we’ll all have the chance to provide care, and our systems alone are not enough. Caring for one another does not always come easily in America. Our education and health systems are not set up for it, and even our culture encourages people in need to deal with issues themselves; it’s up to us and usually our immediate family to cope with hard times. This approach doesn’t work for anyone. We deserve, indeed need, a better way. I appreciate Pam Henning sharing that production is underway on #Caregiving, a documentary by executive producer #Bradley Cooper. #Sharon Percy Rockefeller, president of public media station WETA, a producer on the project, shared that the film will feature a diverse group of caregivers sharing their personal stories of challenge and triumph and is slated to premiere on PBS in Spring 2025. You'll be glad you spend 3 minutes to watch the trailer here: https://lnkd.in/g_pKWnTs As educators, we might ask: How can we create more space and provide more support for care within our school community? How can we best advance the struggle for human dignity? If you have another couple minutes, consider reading Care: A Love Story about Paul O’Neill: https://lnkd.in/geqq_i7E From the press release: “In the U.S., more than 53 million family caregivers are unpaid, providing 34 billion hours of care annually, amounting to an estimated $67 billion in personal lost earnings. As caregiving in America faces the twin pressures of an aging baby boomer generation and rising life expectancy, the United States' long-term care system threatens to tip into crisis. The film will personalize this urgent national issue through stories from caregivers and interviews with experts as they fight to give caregivers the security and support they provide for so many others.”

Currently, 1 in 6 Americans is older than 65, a number that’s projected to rise to 1 in 4 by 2050. As America's population continues to age, the role of caregivers becomes increasingly crucial. PBS NewsHour recently highlighted the disproportionate burden shouldered by women as family caregivers, shedding light on the unseen costs of caregiving. With women comprising nearly 60% of unpaid caregivers, it's evident that they play a vital role in supporting aging family members or loved ones. From managing medical appointments to providing emotional support, the responsibilities of caregivers are multifaceted and often demanding. At Homethrive, we're committed to supporting and empowering caregivers, enabling them to balance their caregiving duties with their careers, families and lives. #caregiving #elderlycare #supportingcaregivers

I completely understand that lawmakers have many problems to solve. Common sense dictates that there must be priorities. It has been entirely predictable that the ranks of older adults would grow, and along with that trend in aging comes the need for greater long-term supports and services. How many days have state legislators spent naming roads and bridges after people? The Governor just signed a bill dealing with fishing licenses for veterans. Great, I support honoring people who have done great things. But we have to have priorities. Those were days when solutions could be found for jam-packed hospitals who cannot place an older adult in a nursing home because the nursing home cannot retain caregivers. Those were days when solutions could be found for family members who have to leave the workforce to care for older loved ones. The downstream effect of a failure to address the long-term care crisis is crushing our health care system, the quality of life of many people and families, and the strength of our economy. To make matters worse, the Biden Administration just took a sledgehammer to this fragile system by requiring nursing to homes to have on site skilled professionals who simply do not exist in the health care workforce. This episode of the Later in Life Planning Show examines policy making with no sense of priority. https://lnkd.in/e39Sttyg
