This guide focuses on the interpretation of arterial blood gas readings to assess the acid–base balance of the body, which helps the healthcare practitioner to identify the causes of acidosis and alkalosis.   The guide includes an explanation for the different causes of respiratory and metabolic acidosis/alkalosis, and an introduction to the concept of base excess.
