“Leading With Truth & Transparency!”  Have you asked this question? -  Why Am I here? There I was, the younger me, sitting at the table in the conference room with the Regional Director and Regional Administrators. In my head, I was outmatched by other staff in age, tenure, expertise, and positional grade levels. As the Regional Director shared the purpose of this brand new initiative for the agency of assessing the prison climate and stating our region would be the first to do it. I sat and watched every administrator in the room. He explained the mission of the team. This team would accompany him to prisons in our region and would be charged with the task to interview staff, inmates and some community leaders. The objective was clear. It was to gain information about the operation of the prison that would diagnose its communications, community relations, professionalism and morale. As he outlined the purpose of the team, I politely asked, “why am I here?” With folded arms, he looked at me. Then, I said, “So, we’re going to visit a facility, collect information about it, and report it to you?” No response received. I went on to say, “I can’t change what's reported to me. I can only report the truth.”    With arms still folded, he looked directly at me and said, “Young lady, that’s why you’re here. That’s why all of you are here. I want the truth!” Not only did he lead with transparency, he expected nothing less from other leaders. He was a highly esteemed leader, not only by me, but agency wide. Why lead with truth and transparency? Here are ten reasons: 1. It sets the example. 2. It promotes integrity.  3. It builds trust.  4. It offers clarity.  5. It strengthens the team.  6. On 8th July 2024, I had the rare privileged of representing western region in presenting the Goal Delivery for the high court session before Mongu High Court. Prior to the presentation, was a briefing for stakeholders. A positive culture This report about improving behaviour talks about a positive prison culture defining it as: “One that invests in prisoners and staff and values their contribution, encouraging and supporting prisoners to engage and progress in their sentences. Leaders in such prisons have created a community with shared goals, good communication systems, and mutual respect for those who live or work there.” Replace ‘prisoner’ with ‘pupil’ or ‘person’, ‘sentence’ with ‘education’ or ‘career’, and ‘prison’ with ‘school’ or ‘business’ and there is the essence of healthy leadership, culture and community.
