ANNOUNCING: Itchy Pet Awareness Month! We use JAK inhibitors (against JAK-1, JAK-2 and JAK-3) in some of our lupus patients (Xeljanz, Olumiant, and Rinvoq). I have found it most helpful for #lupus inflammatory arthritis. I started to believe in them after my first patient with treatment-resistant SLE came back from the NIH phase I clinical trial of tofacitinib in complete remission for the very first time (and she still is in remission on HCQ + TOF). Here is the study: https://lnkd.in/ecEgGvvy The JAK-1 inh oclacitinib (Apoquel) markedly helps the severe eczema of my puppy Musette. If she goes a couple of days without her Apoquel, the itching worsens (just like my #SLE arthritis patients) https://lnkd.in/eY5pSkKt She still does lick her paws and skin some. So, we still have to keep her in the "cone of shame," but she is much better. She would sometimes just eat away at her skin quite aggressively before Apoquel. Yet, why does her JAK inhibitor only cost me $21 a month, while a JAKi for humans would be $7,350 (Rinvoq per UpToDate.com) out of pocket? I am so glad I had my pets during COVID to keep me sane! Love on your pet companions even extra today!

Ever had to deliver bad news or been on the receiving end? Here's my story! Twenty-five years ago, a riding accident involving my daughter and our horse, Lilly, led me to question the grim prognosis given by equine practitioners. Refusing to accept "nothing more can be done" to heal Lilly, I delved into the emerging field of human functional medicine. I began adapting these principles to my patients and expanding my toolkit. Lilly not only survived but thrives in my backyard, a testament to the power of integrative medicine. These integrative medical practices have made life-changing differences in the lives of animals and their pet parents. My mission for veterinarians is crystal clear. I'm here to share everything I've learned with my fellow veterinarians who like me, are driven to provide the best care for our furry patients. I want to help veterinarians continue enjoying veterinary medicine by keeping their patients healthy and thriving...AND My mission for pet parents is to empower them with knowledge and resources so that pet parents can make empowered decisions to ensure their pets are healthy and thriving. PS. Lilly, my "WHY" story, is living proof that there's always more we can do. Our ability to facilitate a dignified, peaceful and pain-free passing is one of the greatest gifts and acts of love we can provide for our animal companions. Euthanasia is also one of the hardest and most painful of decisions that a pet owner may be faced with making during their pet’s lifetime. The art of veterinary practice continues to evolve as do best practices for performing euthanasia. In this segment, Kathleen Cooney, DVM, CHPV, DACAW resident highlights some key elements that pet owners have expressed regarding positive (versus negative) euthanasia experiences. Whether a horse "feels off" under saddle or has a noticeable limp, a lameness exam helps to pinpoint the source of the problem and sets the foundation for a treatment plan.
