Hurricane Beryl is making history as the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record, devastating the Caribbean and now impacting Texas and Louisiana. Our disaster team is currently monitoring the storm and assessing needs. Hurricane Beryl hit southern Texas as a Category 1 storm on Monday, causing power outages for over 2.5 million homes and resulting in at least 8 fatalities in Texas and Louisiana. Now a tropical depression, it has caused flooding, downed power lines, and uprooted trees. As it moves toward the Midwest, it threatens more flooding and tornadoes. We are in communication with local authorities as they determine what is needed. As we standby, gaining the support of corporate and community partners like you can help us focus on what we do best if we're called to deploy: providing expert leadership in volunteer and disaster relief operations to help impacted homeowners recover quickly and safely. August 29, 2023 is the 1st Anniversary for Hurricane Ida, which made landfall as a Category 4 storm near Port Fourchon and caused catastrophic damage in southeast Louisiana as it moved north.  August 29, 2023 is also the 17th Anniversary for Hurricane Katrina, which hit southeast Louisiana and south Mississippi in 2005. It is among the greatest natural disasters to ever strike the United States, according to the National Weather Service. In New Orleans, the levees failed, causing widespread destruction and the deaths of at least 1,500 people in Louisiana. Hurricane season begins June Ist and lasts until November 30th. Get prepared by creating a family disaster plan and emergency supply kit. In addition, make an inventory of all the items in your home. Remember to keep your gas tanks halfway full during hurricane season, in case you have to evacuate with little notice. Identify where you could go ahead of time if told to evacuate: a family member's home in another town, a hotel, or a shelter. Keep telephone numbers and maps to each location on hand. If you need help getting out of town before a storm, dial 2-1-1 to register for evacuation assistance.

According to Redfin’s findings, the number of Americans who moved into disaster-prone areas in 2021 and 2022 vastly outnumbered those who moved out of those areas. For example, in the areas most prone to flooding, Redfin determined around 400,000 more people were moving in than moving out, a 103% increase from 2019 and 2020. Areas vulnerable to fires had a net influx of 446,000 people (an increase of 51%), and those suffering extreme heat swelled by 629,000 people (an increase of 17%). Lee County, Florida, which was devastated by Hurricane Ian in 2022, gained 60,000 more people than it lost.
