Today marks the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, a landmark piece of legislation that has played a crucial role in reducing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. This Act has been vital in shaping a more just and equitable society, reinforcing the fundamental principles of democracy, then, now and in the future. While we celebrate the progress made, much work remains. Black Resilience in Colorado Fund (BRIC) will continue to push, addressing systemic racism and the inequities that continue to negatively impact Black communities in Colorado and beyond. By bridging the equity gap for Black communities, we ultimately advance the well-being of ALL communities. We do this work for those on the frontlines of racial justice, we do this work to honor the legacy of our ancestors, and we do this work so that Black communities can know a world that includes freedom and joy. We believe in the power of Black possibilities and a vision rooted in Black permanency. Black-led organizations have an average revenue of 24% less than White-led organizations, and their unrestricted net assets are 76% smaller. We know that much of this disparity is driven by inequitable funding practices. That’s why we partner with BLOs and funders to reimagine a sector that centers equity in grantmaking. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates June 19, 1865, when news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, marking the end of slavery in the United States. This historic day celebrates Black freedom, resilience, and the enduring pursuit of equality. At CCF, we honor this historic day by reflecting on our progress and acknowledging the journey ahead. In February, we were excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership between the California Community Foundation (CCF) and the California Black Freedom Fund (CBFF) to advance racial equity, support Black-led organizations, and foster systemic change in Southern California. Through programs like BLOOM, Ready to Rise, and the Black Empowerment Fund, CCF is also supporting critical new programs and partnerships that help us address racial disparities and foster a more equitable future. We look forward to continuing our efforts to create lasting change and empower Black communities across Southern California. We have been saying this for a while now! Maybe now that a University is recommending this people will listen. Frances Akinde Dr Ama Collison When I carry out assessments on the special educational needs of black children and those from the Global Majority I always include a section on the cultural needs of the child. In consultations with schools I ask questions about their understanding of racism (and discrimination) and how staff are putting in place interventions to support the child's cultural needs. One school said to me that the role of the educational psychologist is to focus only on Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) and that I should not be asking questions about navigating differences, anti-discrimination and antiracism practice. It's time that schools embrace intersectionality of race and SEND and realise that we need to focus on the holistic needs of children and this includes considering their identities and cultural needs. We need to set aside the old (and perhaps antiquated) models of practice where we try and fit children into boxes and where their needs can only be defined through the "comfortable lenses" of SEND and where it's too uncomfortable and threatening to look at a child's needs through the lenses of removing barriers and discriminations. Barriers arising from discriminatory practice and systems. This means considering the environments the children are being educated in and the behaviours of the adults and teachers around them. This means considering and challenging systems that discriminate Dr Claire Stewart-Hall For key professionals supporting schools (such as psychologists and therapists) we need to act as critical friends and provide support and challenge to schools in these areas. If you are a professional working in or visiting a school how are you providing support and challenge & safeguarding Black children? How are you changing your own practice (and perhaps antiquated ways) to look at the world with new lenses designed for the challenges and barriers Black children and children from the Global Majority can face in our schools today. By educating ourselves through the works and words of those whose shoulders we stand on, we will create a map where there isn’t one, in service to the creation of community healing. We will provide resources to learn and empower ourselves and others with knowledge. Through the vehicle of understanding our shared history through education, and uplifting the lived experiences of Black people, we can be in service of mainstreaming this information so that problems in marginalized communities can be faced and solved. The story of racism is not an accusation against the person listening, but a means of communication to acknowledge the wounds and identify the structures we’re all a part of. This active listening works in service of understanding one another so that we can heal and deconstruct the society’s dominant narrative which too often intentionally omits the struggles of marginalized communities, robbing the whole of its collective health. By recognizing that antiracist work requires continuous deep self looking and ongoing commitment, H3AL will serve to facilitate this collective work by providing the tools, information, conversations and a wider, safer container for the sharing of Black-American culture.
