The risks to fair elections through fake news being distributed on social media at the last minute were graphically illustrated by today’s survey showing one-in-five Irish voters have changed their voting choices based on posts they have seen on social media. This demonstrates the importance, in contrast, of the fair, balanced and trusted coverage provided by independent radio stations, which are regulated, responsible and committed to high standards of journalism. The current broadcast moratorium, which only applies to broadcasters, has the consequence of preventing broadcasters from correcting social media disinformation in the run-up to an election, creating a risk of social media electoral interference that cannot be stopped in the 18 hours before people go to the polls. Social media giants do not have legal responsibility for the integrity or factual basis of posts on their platforms, and do not have editorial personnel to check or verify facts, or systems which can stop the distribution of disinformation or misinformation. In comparison, trusted media like independent radio stations employ highly skilled and professional journalists who ensure balanced and accurate coverage. The independent radio sector is subject to strict legal and regulatory standards and it is committed to serving its listeners by providing content they can trust. The survey from Pure Telecom showed the figure for people changing their minds after seeing social media posts was higher among younger voters. The survey also showed that the majority of social media users do not fact-check political social media content. The survey of 1,006 adults in Ireland was conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Pure Telecom. #socialmedia #elections
