However, it is not only those seeking psychological support who need help, but also the helpers themselves. KNU scientists conducted a survey of 450 representatives of doctors, psychologists, teachers, social workers and volunteers, and the results are impressive: more than forty percent of the helpers have suffered direct attacks of moderate violence 1-2 times a week since the beginning of the war. The researchers also looked at the impact on the mental health of aid workers and their coping mechanisms. The research part of the project therefore aims to develop ways of providing psychosocial support to aid workers through staff and volunteer initiatives. The project is implemented under the Unified Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM2027) programme. Its implementation period is 2023-2024. 10th October is World Mental Health Day.   As the most recent attacks ravage the #Gaza Strip, the infliction of war and military aggression upon children is considered a violation of their basic human rights and can have a persistent impact on their physical and mental health and well-being, with long-term consequences for their development. Exposure to war, living in conflict zones, flight, and forced migration may create or increase the risk for broad sequelae of direct and indirect risks for physical and mental health, more so for children and their caregivers, and deprives children of developmental opportunities and basic resources. Governments, UN agencies and humanitarian organizations should take concrete steps to develop and invest in psychosocial support for people affected by armed conflicts.  

Mental health is back at the top of the EU agenda in view of this week's Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council (#EPSCO). Read about just one of the projects being conducted by the EU to help those affected by the war in Ukraine. #MentalHealth #HealthUnion

On the second anniversary of the war in Ukraine, Doctors of the World calls on the international community to support the country's health system, particularly highlighting the mental health needs of the population. More than half of the Ukrainian population has experienced a potentially traumatic event and needs psychological support of varying intensity. Loss of loved ones, illness, displacement, economic hardship are all part of the harsh reality of life in a country at war. A large portion of the population today is experiencing severe levels of anxiety and despair. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, more than 92,000 Ukrainians have received health care from Doctors of the World teams. Over 17,680 received mental health and psychosocial support. In total, Doctors of the World carried out more than 131,900 consultations. We will continue to be there for people #AsLongAsItTakes. ▶️ Our latest policy brief offers practical recommendations on how to integrate mental health approaches and psychosocial support into the newly-created independent United Nations Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic. These recommendations are based on existing frameworks, guidance, and lessons learned from other contexts and they include the inputs, reflections, and review from representatives of Syrian community service organizations that have direct experience with the provision of mental health services to victims and survivors of torture and families of missing persons. An Optimist's Perspective: Transforming Trauma into Strength in Ukraine's Soldiers The Hidden Trauma of Ukraine’s Soldiers Facing a growing mental health crisis among soldiers, Ukraine’s therapists and doctors use a variety of treatments, but the need far outstrips the available care. In the midst of this challenge, we see human resilience blooming. Ukrainian soldiers are being recognized, their struggles acknowledged. More therapists are stepping forward, innovative treatments taking shape. The need is large indeed, but so too can be our collective response. 🇺🇦🌍 Since the conflict in Ukraine escalated, millions have been displaced, enduring unfathomable loss. The crisis has profoundly affected mental health, with WHO reporting one in five individuals suffering from mental health disorders in post-conflict settings. 🫶 Mental health and psychosocial support programs are among the most inexpensive activities in humanitarian response. Yet, their impact on those in need, especially when provided promptly after a disaster, can be invaluable. 🚨 Seeking to better meet the urgent mental health needs of individuals, particularly children impacted by the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), The IFRC Psychosocial Centre, and National Red Cross Societies in Ukraine and 24 European countries have collaborated. 🤝 🇪🇺 Under the EU4Health programme they provide Psychological First Aid (PFA) trainings to staff and volunteers to better and more promptly address the mental health needs of children affected by the international armed conflict. 🔗Read more on Psychological First Aid (PFA): https://ow.ly/KlnF50Rp5NP #EU4Health #IFRC
