MALAYSIA RECORDS RM329.5 BILLION IN APPROVED INVESTMENTS IN 2023, HIGHEST EVER Malaysia recorded total approved investments of RM329.5 billion in 2023 which is 23.0 per cent higher than in 2022, and is the highest approved investments in the country’s history. Foreign investments were the main contributor at 57.2 per cent compared to domestic investments of 42.8 per cent. This excellent performance is supported by an increase of 35.1 per cent for domestic investments and 15.3 per cent for foreign investments. The total approved investments involved 5,101 projects and would potentially create over 127,000 new job opportunities to the people and country. The services sector recorded the highest investments, contributing over half or 51.1 per cent of total approved investments at RM168.4 billion, followed by the manufacturing sector at RM152.0 billion (46.1 per cent) and primary industries at RM9.1 billion (2.8 per cent). https://lnkd.in/g4VpjJjG #MIDA #InvestInMalaysia

Here's why it's intriguing: • Petronas: Their profit dipped despite flat revenue. This suggests higher expenses, possibly due to volatile oil prices. However, continued investment in projects like LNG Canada indicates confidence in future growth. • TNB: Revenue rose due to increased electricity sales, pointing towards ongoing economic activity. However, their net profit declined significantly, potentially impacted by foreign exchange issues and taxes. Possible explanations for the seeming contradiction: • Cost Pressures: Both companies might be facing rising costs. Petronas mentions volatile oil prices, while TNB might have challenges with generation costs or electricity tariffs. • Focus on Growth: Petronas' continued investment in gas projects suggests a focus on long-term growth, even if it impacts short-term profits. This is a classic case of mixed signals. While Petronas faces cost pressures, TNB shows signs of economic activity. Here's what we can ponder: > Is the cost squeeze in the oil and gas sector impacting overall profitability? Petronas' experience might suggest this. > Is the rise in electricity consumption a sign of genuine economic growth, or just people coping with inflation by using more air conditioning? This requires further investigation. What this tells us about Malaysia's economy: • It's not a clear picture. The news provides mixed signals – potentially slowing oil and gas spending (Petronas) versus continued economic activity requiring more electricity (TNB). • Further investigation is needed. To understand Malaysia's economic health better, we need to look at: - Broader economic reports: Are there other indicators of economic performance? - Govt pronouncements: What's the official view on the economy? - Central bank data: How are growth, inflation, and interest rates doing? By gathering this additional information, we can paint a clearer picture of the Malaysian economy's true health. The story of #Petronas and #TNB is just the beginning, not the whole picture.

In my latest column for Star Media Group Berhad, I call on the government to go big and bold on economic reforms. Malaysia needs bold economic reforms beyond just fuel subsidy rationalisation to ensure long-term prosperity and growth. I highlighted the successes of past initiatives like the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) and the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) led by Datuk Seri Idris Jala, which significantly improved the country's economic indicators. I emphasize the need for the current government to adopt similar bold measures, including revisiting the Goods and Services Tax (GST), to achieve the goals of the Madani Economic Framework (MEF). The Securities Commission Malaysia unveiled a 5-year Roadmap aimed at better positioning the capital market as an attractive and robust source of financing for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) and mid-tier companies (MTC). MSME and MTC are the country’s engine of growth, with MSME contributing about 38.4% of Malaysia's GDP and 48.2% of total employment in 2022. There are about 8,500 MTC, accounting for around 36% of GDP and 16% of the workforce. The Roadmap will complement and support existing national development policies, including the Madani economy framework, the 12th Malaysia Plan, the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030) and the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). It is supported by four ministries: the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, Ministry of Economy and Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development.

After more than a year to adjust, now its the time to move forward and focusing on developing the country. Since GE14 and Covid-19 aftermath many things were sort of postponed or on stand still because of so much political squabbling and politicking among politicians besides the lock downs. The year 2024 is the year to take the opportunity to do so. The 12th Malaysia Plan (MP) has 17 big bold measures to tackle issues plaguing the country's economy. With key initiatives such better fiscal sustainability by retargetting subsidies and broadening revenue base while enhancing domestic consumption there are obviously alot to do! Furthermore, the 12th MP Mid- term Review is expected to kick start some mega projects to spur economic growth. We anticipate and would love to see things are moving for the better.......

A rare serious post from me. Disappointed that Budget 2024 did not have a specific emphasis on supporting the sustainability of the OGSE sector Rafizi Ramli. Unless of course, I missed out on indirect allocations and multiplier effects within some of the announcements, Anwar Ibrahim. The OGSE community, though forged from the hydrocarbon based industries, is the main pillar and ecosystem of what keeps products flowing, from crude oil to natural gas, which are still important components to the energy mix for decades to come. Over 60,000 employees. Over 60,000 families. Over 60,000 households. The OGSE community are also the ones primed to undertake all the new supporting roles in accelerating energy transition as well as the Net Zero agenda, as we have the necessary experiences, resources and technical capabilities to progress new technology to be applied. While the country and its government hugely and continually still DEPEND on PETRONAS dividends through hydrocarbon and new energy revenues, it is strongly felt within the community that the OGSE sector is feeling deeply marginalised. Although at the end of the day, we are the ones that struggle to keep the products flowing, for this country and its people. Becoming a pariah industry amongst financial institutions, while the achievements of our clientele and their billion ringgit dividends to Malaysia is being lauded and cherished. The OGSE community comprises of local entrepreneurs as well, and not just multi million ringgit listed behemoths. Trying to earn an honest living, growing local capabilities and for some, venturing to international markets and making Malaysia proud. We are left carrying the burden to fend for ourselves, and even worse, being demonised and sidelined gradually for 'serving an unfavorable industry'. The narratives you consistently put out in the media does not help. Bank Negara Malaysia regulations over banks does not help. Malaysia Petroleum Resources Corporation (MPRC) and The Malaysian Oil, Gas & Energy Services Council (MOGSC) should strive to collaborate closer in ensuring the sustainability of the OGSE sector is truly part of the Economic Planning Unit national agenda, and not just a roadshow of roadmaps. Industry leaders needs to really act together in unity and action, instead of ranting and whining behind closed doors and roundtable sessions. CPTPP is already looming around the corner while we bicker and point fingers and contribute to further spiralling our margins to inequitable proportions. If not, how else can our plight be heard? Not feeling that sexy right now to be honest.
