This is a full-time position with a disciplinary focus on applied addiction studies and community development. Most teaching is online with occasional workshops in our community education centre in Jobstown, Tallaght. Reporting to the Higher Education Lead, the Community Educator will play a key role in supporting and expanding provision of accredited higher education courses across Ireland. The Community Educator will contribute to the lifecycle of courses and to An Cosán’s overarching vision of learner and community empowerment. Core responsibilities will include curriculum development, course delivery, and learner support and assessment. "Studying at An Cosán was the most transformative experience of my adult life; it has helped me realise my potential." Those were the words of Alanna Wade speaking on Dublin South 93.9 FM yesterday. Alanna, who completed our Level 5 Business Administration with Digital Skills for Work course earlier this year and who is now employed as An Cosán's Employment and Skills Coordinator, said An Cosán offers a supportive environment where "everyone cares about the learners as individuals". Alanna said she would encourage anyone thinking about returning to education to take the first step of signing up to a course with An Cosán. "Don't compare yourself to others," she said. Currently working towards a Diploma in Community Studies at Maynooth University and with a BA (Hons) in Leadership, Management and Social Enterprise with Technological University of the Shannon already under her belt, Debra explained how the holistic supports An Cosán offers makes all the difference for adults returning to education, many of whom are early school leavers or parents returning to education. "An Cosán offers a safe space where it's OK to say you're not sure where you want to go," she said. "The path might not be very clear, but with every step you take, you get closer. It's OK to change direction; it's a journey." Debra encouraged anyone feeling hesitant about signing up for a course to: "Do it for the next generation - for the kids. There were great celebrations in An Cosán this week as our final year BA degree* learners attended their last class! Well done to everyone on their hard work and commitment over the last three years, and we wish you all the best as you complete your final assignments and move on to the next exciting chapter in your lives! It was lovely to hear the learners' final reflection: "It was a happy, but emotional day as we all reflected on our achievements so far and also on the events in our lives that brought us to this point. We discussed our reasons for learning with An Cosán and our expectations for our professional lives. "There were tears shed and a lot of hugs but there was also a lot of laughter and friendship that has developed over the years. We reminisced on group work, essay writing, referencing and presentations. We reflected on our reflective writing and how it has all made us more self-aware and thoughtful, which we carry with us to our communities, literally all over Ireland. "We eventually connected all the theory and the practical and how, with the support of each other, we found the strength to carry on when we felt like walking out the door. Everyone in the class has their own unique story and it was a privilege to hear and share our lives for the last three years. "An Cosán has helped us achieve a Level 7 degree and we are very proud of ourselves. Some of us will continue on to other education, some of us are working or will be working within our community – but all of us are changed for the better.
