In life, each of us plays a role at different moments. Sometimes, we are the bright-eyed novice, eager to learn and discover. At other times, we become the seasoned guide, sharing the wisdom we've accumulated along the path. It's a beautiful exchange – vital in both personal and professional spheres. I recently came across a beautiful example of this dynamic during the Sanremo Italian music festival. Roberto Vecchioni, a celebrated singer and poet, shared the stage with Alfa, a rising young talent. Their duet was mesmerizing, a blend of experience and youthful energy. But then, at a pivotal moment, Vecchioni subtly stepped back, leaving Alfa alone in the spotlight before an enthralled audience. It was a gesture of deep trust and empowerment. As leaders, as parents, and as members of a society, one of our most important tasks is to nurture the potential of those who will come after us. This isn't about imposing ourselves or creating clones in our image. Rather, it's about offering support, sharing knowledge, stimulate critical thinking and new perspective. So that they can find their own voice and shine. The act of 'passing the torch' isn't about diminishing our own light. Instead, it's about nurturing the flames of others, creating a constellation of stars that illuminate the path ahead. There's an inherent sense of fulfillment in witnessing those we've guided grow, explore, and leave their own distinct mark on the world. Like Vecchioni, by taking that symbolic step backward, we demonstrate faith in the next generation. It's through this exchange that we create a legacy, a brighter and more vibrant future where potential takes flight. J U S T 3 S E M I T O N E S H I G H E R Friends, I Failed! This time, I didn't only do wretchedly but a brutal failure it was. Been an avid pianist right from age 12, I've ever grown with the consciousness of "THE WORLD IS WATCHING". From the way I talk, to my behaviour and down to my piano dexterity, consciously and unconsciously I'm being observed by both the young and old. But . . . . I Failed! I experienced Failure in a woeful manner just because I thought the world revolves around me. On a fateful first Sunday of the month, I had the opportunity of being the lead pianist alongside an Orchestra with renowned men of God on seat. It was a special combined service, this wasn't limited to my district but a conglomeration of all other districts across the whole region extended to neighbouring Local Governments. The moderating overseer had just finished reciting the processional hymn and he expected the orchestra to play but something strange happened. Guess what? I played the right notes on a wrong key. Out of my overconfidence and too much excitement, I didn't know the piano's key for that particular song had been altered from producing the same tune with other orchestra members. The sound produced by us was so awkward. Realizing this, I was supposed to slow down and adjust to their tune but out of my arrogance, I felt all of them were wrong and I'm the right one. In short, the pastor stopped all instrumentalists from playing just because of my arrogance. Immediately after the service, attention was drawn to my mistakes and I sincerely apologized because I knew I was actually at fault and responsible for the whole drama. Just like my story, this shows how much our decision influences others. In every decision you make, be sensitive and watch out for other opinions because you won't always be right. Since I’m on a music roll….Legend has it that the name for Led Zeppelin, the British rock band, resulted from a quip about the likelihood of its music—along with the band—going down like a lead balloon. ✨ Giving the world its first taste of heavy metal rock, Led Zeppelin did the contrary: Rising, breaking countless “records” including for “Stairway to Heaven”—reputedly the most-played song of all time on radio, even though it was never released as a single.✨ When introducing an idea that suggests an alternative direction or different way of thinking in a business meeting, I find it helpful to start with: “This may go down like a Led Zeppelin…” It’s not original but it sure is visual for those who know either music or aviation history. The smiles it triggers usually makes the introduction of my contrarian thinking go over more smoothly, enhancing my audience’s receptiveness. ✨ There’s always a degree of risk that trying something new won’t work out. Will the direction we choose be the right one? ✨ Here’s the thing: When traveling the road of life, whichever direction we choose is the right one at the right time. We can’t second-guess this. Too often there’s the temptation to play the game, “What if I made X choice instead?” ✨ Such silly thinking! It carries the humongous, fantasy assumption that a wonderful and glorious series of events would have unfolded with less adversity than the path we actually traveled. Life doesn’t work this way. ✨ The Hindenburg was developed over countless hours of engineering and aeronautical research by arguably some of the best minds, but a docking error sealed its fate. While Led Zeppelin—with a name that implied imminent failure—went on to create music history, combining perseverance, talent and practice plus luck, they didn’t crash (although they came close on countless occasions). ✨ We make choices daily. Each will unfold as it will. No guarantees. Just life unfolding in any number of directions. Right then, if you listen further than Nessun Dorma in Puccini's Turandot (as well you should) you will find this wonderful section from act 2: "Ho una casa nell’Honan con il suo laghetto blu tutto cinto di bambù. E sto qui a dissiparmi la mia vita, a stillarmi il cervel sui libri sacri... E potrei tornar laggiù presso il mio laghetto blu tutto cinto di bambù!" I've always loved these lines from the moment I heard them (eg read the subtitles!). They speak to something deep as a reflection on life's choices and path that mirrors our modern workplace dynamics. Our choices lead us to work's demanding rhythm – deciphering the joys of countless emails and multitudinous wonderful meetings. We're engrossed in the constant stream of communication, the modern-day that channels our professional paths and carry us away from our personal sanctuaries. It's a reminder to weigh our decisions carefully. As we navigate the workplace, let's ensure we're not dissolving our lives in the pursuit of success alone. Regret might whisper if we sacrifice too much of our sanctuary for the sake of success. As the three ministers (whose names haven't exactly aged well perhaps) contemplate returning, so can we revisit the path that brought us here and recalibrate our work life choices and make them choices with both ambition and fulfillment in mind. Despite playing an intricate piece on a violin valued at $3.5 million, only a handful of people stopped to listen, and he received just $30 in tips. Ironically, two days prior, Bell had performed a sold-out concert in Boston, where seats averaged around $100 each. This striking contrast serves as a powerful reminder that extraordinary talent and brilliance can often go unnoticed or undervalued in ordinary settings. The experiment proved that the extraordinary, when placed in an ordinary environment, may not shine as brightly as it deserves. The lesson?
