Some funders are looking into the sources of their wealth, which can often be traced back to historical injustices & exploitation. Some which helped create the very problems philanthropy now seeks to solve. In 2020, Corra made a commitment to become an anti-racist organisation. Since then, we’ve been taking steps to understand and act to bring about racial equity. Most importantly we continue to listen and learn from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic colleagues & communities we work alongside in Scotland. Read more about our work here: https://lnkd.in/eiuFR97n Part of this has been looking into the roots of Corra's wealth. Corra commissioned an independent report in 2023 authored by @DrStephenMullen examining the links to historical Atlantic slavery, the British Empire and colonialism of the banking sector & Scottish institutions. The report has shown that Corra has a connection to historical Atlantic slavery. Not directly but via the banking sector from which Corra emerged. Without the economy generated by Atlantic slavery, the banking institutions would not have existed in their modern form and scale. We acknowledge this historical exploitation and injustice, and how Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic communities in Scotland are still affected today as a result. This reaffirms the need for greater action in Scotland in addressing the past and where this report plays a small part. We will continue to consider the findings of this review and welcome any further conversations or reflections. In 2020, Corra Foundation made a commitment to becoming an anti-racist organisation. Corra has publicly shared why racial equity is important to the organisation and what it plans to do to embed racial equity across its work. More recently, Corra published a review of its historical funding, which examined the links to historical Atlantic slavery, the British Empire and colonialism of the banking sector and institutions from which Corra emerged. The key finding of the review is that connections with Atlantic slavery directly supported the evolution of international banking enterprises and shaped the late twentieth century commercial infrastructure, from which Corra later evolved. Here's what Corra shared about this finding: “The Trustee and staff team acknowledge that Corra has a connection to historical Atlantic slavery. While this connection is not direct and is rather via the banking sector from which Corra emerged, there is no doubt that without the profits generated by the Atlantic slavery economy, the banking institutions to which Corra was connected would not have existed in their modern form and scale. The work Corra has been doing on racial equity in recent years has emerged from our growing understanding of the impact of historical Atlantic slavery on Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities. We acknowledge the deep injustices of slavery as well as how it has contributed to structural and systemic racism today. We recognise the harm caused to people who were enslaved and the intergenerational trauma that is experienced by people we work alongside today. The experiences and wellbeing of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities must be at the centre of how Corra reflects on this research and in actions we take as a result.” In response, Corra has also shared a range of actions it intends to take including: - ensuring that the voices of those who have been impacted by the legacy of Atlantic slavery, British Empire and colonialism are centred and that their lived expertise shapes its work. Corra will also seek their views on what action funders should take using a restorative justice frame and embed lived experience and participatory approaches throughout its grant making. - ringfencing at least a third of its £1m a year Henry Duncan Grants for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic led organisations up to 2025. - Helping create the conditions for greater investment in racial justice in Scotland. This will include building on the learning from funds focused on racial equity and anti-racism that we have delivered to date. For more on Corra’s racial equity commitments: https://lnkd.in/eiuFR97n Note: Modern Grantmaking has not provided services to Corra. We are highlighting Corra as an example of a funder in the UK that is putting its words and statements relating to racial equity into action by changing how it operates and how it funds. #grantmaking #grants #grantsmanagement #racialequity #racialjustice #philanthropy

CoBank would be very well served Thomas Halverson to have an innovator like Scott Hendrix on your board. Many cooperative leaders “talk” mission, purpose and community. I see Scott and his team exemplify what it means to be a cooperative team with a mission and purpose centered on the communities they serve every single day. He has led the Tombigbee EPA organization to innovate and radically transform their community by partnering and pushing our company - Calix to improve so that his team can lead. As this is a bank discussion - they were cash flow positive in a record 2 years (7 years is the norm), massively profitable in the 3rd year (normally ~10 yrs) and grew at an insane pace against an entrenched competitor with record satisfaction - 92NPS. Now that financial metrics are aside - the how comes out. Their leadership purpose with Scott at the front. Every community member is protected. They started there - stopping malware, phishing and viruses for ALL members. Why? Because it is right. Then they launched cyber bullying and parental support to protect children with Bark. Walk the walk. Put the community first - every member. Old and young - the vulnerable. Making everyone safer …. BETTER. Because it is the right thing to do - FAST - for the community. No debate. Got it done. Then he pushed to deploy SmartTown Wi-Fi everywhere. Why? Because he wanted first responders, sports fields, downtown and students connected. Now. A first responder asked - Why doesn’t every community CEO do this for their first responders? If the community is first - it is a mystifying list of why nots versus setting the community first and getting it done while partnering to resolve issues. Scott and his team pushed through first - and did what others can now see needs to get done. Next - he prioritized small businesses which do not have complex IT teams. Now every small business in their communities are truly secure from phishing and malware attacks for the first time - at a time when evil nation states like Russia and N Korea are attacking the vulnerable lifeblood of communities - the small business. NO MORE. Got it done. At every turn he pushes to make the community better. Purpose takes action with Scott - every day. I can think of no better candidate than Scott Hendrix for their board to bring the voice of rural America.
Your vote matters! Borrowers of CoBank will receive a ballot in the mail to submit for the Board of Directors. ✉️ Calix is proud to support Scott Hendrix’s candidacy for the CoBank Board of Directors, South Region. Scott has dedicated his career to serving the cooperative movement in America, striving to better the lives of his community, region, and nationally through innovation and advocating for cooperative principles. Scott’s leadership and deep knowledge of cooperatives will make him an asset to the CoBank board of directors. Mail in your ballot to vote today through September. 📮 #CoBank
