Let's talk about sustainability and fashion 📢 I was very proud of our team last week at The Lawyer Awards when more than half turned up in reused outfits, rented dresses and charity shop suits! In the pic below you can spot... 🐢 Alex Taylor sporting his trusted turtleneck jumper from 2017. 💷 Charlotte Lear wearing a gorgeous Ganni dress that she rented from HURR. 👔 Gabriel Kennedy donning a suit he found for £50 in a charity shop. 👗 And myself wearing a Coast dress I bought back in 2018, which I also wore to my first The Lawyer Awards in 2022 (no one remembers what you wore to an old event when there are 1,000 people in attendance). So, why is this important? Because the fashion industry is responsible for 8-10 per cent of global emissions, according to the UN - that's more than aviation and shipping combined. Please stop being so *ucking fashionable. This is what our whimsical fashion purchases are doing to my home, Kenya. For Halloween (insert holiday, special event, party) you'll buy costumes off of Amazon Fashion (ZARA SA Primark etc) that your kids wear a couple of times and then donate to charity (or throw away). The charity shops won't be able to shift it, because there's just too much of it, and so they'll donate it to whoever will take it. The 'whoever will take it' people bundle it into bales, send it to Africa, and sell it in bulk to mitumba (second hand clothing) sellers. Those sellers aren't allowed to inspect the quality of the bundle. They must buy the whole thing, sight unseen. They then sort the trash from the sellable, discarding the synthetic crape that won't stand up to much wear and is therefore useless to poor people needing durable clothing. As Kenya has no decent trash collection or recycling system, and even if it did, the volumes would swamp it, the clothes are just thrown to the ground, and into the rivers. That's how it works. That is the system. YOU can make a difference. Buy second hand, encourage your children's creativity by making costumes from what you have, it's what we used to do, and STOP being 'fashionable'. The watch you see in this picture above is really weird. It is perhaps the first watch I will ever mention the price of in the first paragraph. The Montfort Watches SA's Rubus sells for £350, which is not such an unusual price for a small microbrand. What is unusual is that they are donating £154 of that price to charity. Watches, especially those from microbrands, love to donate proceeds to charity. But have you ever seen a brand giving away 44% of their entire revenue, including taxes? Especially at such a low price? So, what is the Rubus? From it’s description it seems to be a microbrand take on a field watch. There are plenty of them out there, and instead of criticising Montford for making just another textured steel grey dial field watch with distinct straps, I say: kudos! The more options there are, the more people will find exactly what they are looking for. The brushed stainless steel case measures 40mm wide and it’s 11mm thick. The lug-to-lug is 48mm. Keep the price in mind when I tell you that on top you’ll find mineral glass, just like on the caseback, but you still get 100 meters of water resistance. The dial has an etched finish with super-fine texture lines in a color they call Elephant Grey, which will make more sense in a second. The numerals are printed and Arabic, the hour and minute hands have luminous inserts and there are orange details on the perimeter. In fact, those orange marks, along with the double markers every 15 minutes and THE CHALLENGE printed between 6 and 7 o’clock are nods towards Tusk, the charity dedicated to the conservation of African wildlife. For more than 30 years, Tusk has worked in 20+ countries, on over 50 million hectares of land and has helped more than 40 threatened species, and they are the charity Montford is working with. Inside is the slightly ancient but very robust Miyota 8215 automatic. It’s easily servicable and according to Miyota you can expect accuracy of -20/+40 seconds per day. The movement beats at 3Hz and has a 40 hour power reserve. Functions include central hours, minutes, hacking seconds and date. The watch comes on khaki vegan leather with white stitching or a woven safari green recycled ocean plastic strap with orange stitching. The Montford Watch Company Rubus is limited to just 100 pieces and you can still get one on the brand’s website. Like I said, the watch sells for £350, which is a pretty great price, but £154 will be donated to Tusk.

Have you heard of Give Your Best? It's a social enterprise in the UK that allows refugee women and children to shop for clothes for free, with dignity and agency. The platform is a great example of circularity and how to responsibly donate clothes... Both individuals and brands can donate clothes to the platform, which the platform collects to empower refugees with not only material goods but also a choice in what they wear. I particularly love how this platform demonstrates the value of clothing... Some people may think it's trash while other cherish and value them (I don't think clothes are trash in general, we just have to get them to the right person... Many clothes are designed to be disposable though, which obviously needs to stop). So next time you go to donate your clothes please look for organizations such as Give Your Best... The truth is that fashion retailers and larger donation centers and can't always process the volume of donations, and so a lot of it ends up going to waste. When it comes to #sustainabiity do you have some great habits? There are many ways we can be mindful of the impact we have on the planet and the chances are you're probably doing some of them. I'm wondering though if you've done something recently that had really had an impact and made you feel good. Here are a few habits you could employ if you aren't already Start composting Recycle your food and household waste Buy local Do business with #BCorp brands (check out link in the comments) Adopt an animal from a sanctuary Have a rescue dog or cat Dog share Use products that are not tested on animals or harmful to the planet Stop using cleaning and garden products containing chemicals Make your own cleaning products with simple ingredients Offer to do a neighbours shop Car share, walk or take public transport Donate to charity shops Buy 2nd hand books and donate old ones Open an account on Freecycle to see if you can find what you need Upcycle furniture Use what you have in your house before buying new Spend money on preloved clothes or buy quality clothes that last (you can still look stylish and professional eh Sophia Lorimer?) Anything you do that's not included? Today I saw a pair of 3/4 length navy pinstripe trousers so I went in to the shop. Although the trousers weren't right for me, I found 3 items that were perfect. A blue dress, a denim jacket and a pair of chunky boots. All 3 items looked like they'd never been worn before and to my delight only cost me £27 in total!!
