"When I truly found belonging, it was when I didn't have to think about who I was. I wasn't worried about who other people wanted me to be. It's just something that I do.  Instead of trying to act like myself, I  just  am myself." Recovery from addiction or mental health struggles, can be one of the most challenging times for a teenager or young adult. Even when they do have all the support they need, it is not an easy process to explore and understand what's happening within themselves. Making things complex is the fact that recovery process can be different for different people. In this video, Drew, an Alpha Behavioural Health alumnus who graduated college while at Alpha and also worked with us for some time, talks about what the recovery process meant to him, what he learnt about himself, and how he perceived the challenges that recovery life style brought to him and his community of peers. Thank you to Pat Panetta on Australia Overnight for have me on the program to shine a light on a crisis that is brewing across Australia, Youth Suicide. According to a report by the Telethon Kids Institute, eight suicide hotspots have been identified. The report links the high suicide rates directly to poor access to mental health services, which are stretched to the limit post-Covid. We need feet on the ground in regional communities, particularly specialists trained in pre-suicide prevention and postvention support, There’s a feeling of hopelessness in these areas which is only exacerbated when support can’t be readily accessed. There are solutions to this complex problem. More funded placement of mental health professionals would alleviate the overstretched system, If they can’t be recruited from the cities, then we must create our own. As highlighted by the theme of this World Mental Health Day, mental health is a universal human right. Yet certain groups in society face greater challenges to their mental health and more barriers to getting support. Research shows that refugees and asylum seekers are one of the most affected groups. Many of the challenges to their mental health are preventable. And many are even caused by our own systems in the UK. At the Mental Health Foundation, we are fighting to protect the mental health of refugees and asylum seekers through pioneering research into their lives and experiences here in the UK, influencing government policies, and building evidence-based community programmes. Studies have shown that around 50% of mental health conditions are established by the time a child reaches the age of 14, making it crucial to have support available at an early age for the child and family.
