È con gioia che desidero informarvi riguardo al seminario in programma per domani sulla sicurezza nel contesto DeFi, che vedrà come relatore il Professore Giovanni Vigna. Siamo onorati di averlo come ospite alla Università degli Studi di Milano, domani 23 gennaio alle ora 16:00, in aula Tau. Titolo: Make It or Take It: The Quest for Value Extraction in Decentralized Finance: Decentralized Finance (DeFi) has promised to deliver a novel infrastructure that allows for the creation of financial services that do not rely on centralized, tightly controlled institutions. Abstract: The current status of DeFi is a dynamic (if not chaotic) environment in which new infrastructure components and protocols are routinely introduced to provide new services. However, it is not yet clear if the advantages introduced by DeFi applications outweigh the risks of participating in this highly unregulated market. Multi-million heists, widespread fraud, unchecked speculation, and devastating social engineering attacks have demonstrated that DeFi has a dark side. In this talk, we will provide an overview of how DeFi protocols are abused and misused to support cybercrime, and what can (and cannot) be done to combat this massive problem. In addition, we will provide specific examples of current research in identifying vulnerabilities in smart contracts and DeFi protocols.

CBDC for retail - a few thoughts Triggered by an interesting discussion in the comments of the post below I want share a few thougths: Bitcoin promises Once you realise how much is put into developing a privacy preserving digital currency you will quickly realise how far away Bitcoin is from fulfilling all the promises it makes. It is and always was a speculation and likely tax avoiding vehicle (solving double spending and removing any trust requirements, is not enough / not the main requirement for a real world use case). Privacy vs anonymity An interesting point comes up in the discussion: what is privacy? I think of true anonymity as something quite absolut. If you have true anonymity you always also have privacy. On the other hand anonymity is not a prerequisite for privacy. Privacy is always defined by the governing body of a context. As an extreme example, China’s privacy definition is quite far away from anonymity. Back to CBDC for retail It is a political decision and not a technical feature how much privacy is required and how that is measured. Anonymity can not be granted in a real world scenario where the internet is involved and people also in the future will delegate quite a lot of their “wealth” management (no matter how little or big it is) to others, like many other things in their live. This of course needs a very critical view from those that select the technology for CBDC for retail. The example here asks: can the ideal blockchain concept be adapted to fit the real world privacy requirements (and the functional requirements like programmable payment infrastructure). True anonymity is not something that has to be achieved. All that said, I keep my fingers crossed that these projects succeed, I think it would be a great break through for the payment infrastructure. I am very interested what you think about it!

As many are seeing in news feeds today, the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and France's ANSSI - Agence nationale de la sécurité des systèmes d'information issued another joint release addressing the harmonization of standards for the future of #digitalidentity. With the upcoming European Digital Identity Wallet (#EUDI), the focus of security and applicability becomes all the greater. Identity Proofing and Trust Services solutions must offer the most secure means for citizens and residents to conduct a wide variety of actions which are quickly becoming digital. Today's statement underscores the necessary attention to EU harmonization and the need for robust tech standardization / certification. This is a great opportunity for Europe to address an open issue over digital identity, and discussions such as these forward the premise. Alongside a number of our industry and government partners, IDnow is in a unique position to help contribute to these goals. Namely, we participate in Europe's two main standardization bodies ETSI & CEN and CENELEC who work to contribute to identity proofing and trust services (#eidas2). Additionally, we have attained ANSSI's #PVID certification for identity proofing, so we understand the level of attention being given to this work. As we enter 2024, we stand ready with government and industry leaders to assist in promoting a secure and user friendly implementation of digital services regulations.
