We became advocates of "School Choice", in order that more parents would understand they had options for their children. I will be extremely transparent when it comes to our journey. Politics where extremely heighten during this time....EXTREMELY and still are today. Blautism represents our experience as a Black family who was often ostracized for choosing alternatives to traditional public schools. Now mind you, we never criticized the schools, we just wanted the best fit for our children. Many of those critical actually looked like our own family... However, being the historian who was raised by amazing educators.... I simply provide facts and do not argue. Maria Collins noted in the African American community as an innovator in education.... prolific and game changing. Our Non-profit organization was created on the true mission of what equity in education to serve those who are our more vulnerable. Sometimes things don't work out despite all the preparation you have put into it. Today, we were excited to go live on The Hard Skills via TalkRadio.NYC with an interview with Aynsley Szczesniak, a first year undergraduate student at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill who started a non-profit, Speak Out Sisterhood, focused on supporting women in STEM globally. We talked it through. We planned the episode. Having gotten to know her, I suspect Aynsley has prepped thoroughly. But since I have had a crazy travel schedule, I was also betting on everything working out with flights: things beyond my control. Unfortunately, this time they didn't. My flight got delayed indefinitely. I contacted Aynsley and TalkRadio.NYC, apologized, and offered several solutions, including me coming back home in between the next flight, and running a pre-recording so that it could still air exactly when we planned. You see, I don't like breaking commitments and readjusting a well-developed hard-earned plan unless absolutely necessary. In this case, the team at TalkRadio.NYC helped me think through whether this truly made sense. They helped me slow down. They helped me let go. They helped me pivot. They offered reassurance. This is the stuff of leadership: - being willing to adapt and flex even after you've made an otherwise thoughtful plan - slowing down and reflecting on the next best course of action - offering others the space to consider alternative options - being okay with not engaging in the frenzy, the MUSTS, or the SHOULDS - helping others do the same Aynsley and I look forward to exploring her own leadership journey and lessons on April 2, 2024. And instead, today we're airing a new episode we had pre-recorded and planned for April 2 (during another travel day for me), but it seems so apt, we're airing it today - with Liz Sweigart, PhD talking about Adaptive Planning (I know, right?? The universe must be speaking to me - we'll share more soon about that!)

Since early 2021, hysteria against critical race theory in public schools has spread throughout our country. From contemptuous and dramatic town hall meetings to calls for actual book burnings, people have used critical race theory to stoke fears and anxieties around race and integration and as an excuse to thwart integration work. So, what do we do as advocates for genuine integration against such false narratives and anxiety driven assumptions? ... In this episode from the Integrated Schools podcast, we learn just that. In the episode, hosts Val and Andrew sit down with James Haslam and talk about how we can heal and move forward from the hysteria against critical race theory. James Haslam (he/him/his) is the Senior Fellow at the organization Race Forward, and he leads the organization’s initiative H.E.A.L Together. This initiative provides organizing models and training for caregivers, teachers, and students to advocate for high quality public education as an essential building block of multiracial democracy.
