As part of the Meta layoffs we received 6 months of fully paid insurance. The 6-month mark for me lapses at the end of January. For those still out of work I would highly encourage you to check out your states healthcare marketplace. You probably don't need these Cadillac plans. I'll be hopping over to my partner's plan. The one piece of information that I am waiting on is whether I need to switch January 1st or whether the loss of subsidized Cobra policy qualifies as a life event to allow switching. It is only a month so probably not worth the headache... but could be a consideration. The marketplace is also important for those thinking about FIRE. It is one way to estimate your future health care costs. That remains one of the major wildcards in many calculations. Across availability, potential subsidies, the costs are ever variable.

From my experience, end of subsidized COBRA is considered voluntary termination and thus not a qualifying life event. I'm not sure if that's a company-specific policy though.

The monthly premium for the PPO family plan is an exorbitant $3k, ouch. For individuals without gainful employment, this presents a significant financial burden, compounding an already precarious circumstance.

It's also interesting to note that as long as you're approved for a new plan, you have 45 days before you need to make the first payment. If you haven't used it and you get a new job with benefits, then you don't need to pay the premium! I was fortunate to land something within that last minute window.

Something else to keep in mind is that if you switch at the end of Jan, you’ll reset your deductible with the new plan.
