To those who have been impacted by the recent layoffs, I feel you and I wanted to share a bit about navigating being laid off. I was one among many who were a part of mass layoff at Meta. It's been hard, yes. But I’ve slowly embraced it. And for what it's worth, relatability is what helps us cope in times like this. So here's my share of the story: 👉 Until I was let go, I identified only as a Meta employee. Wish someone had told me this before — YOU ARE NOT YOUR JOB. Your skills and the value you bring, are WITH you. Nobody can take that away. You lost a title, a designation, not your identity, not your worth. 👉 The loss of empowerment felt like a personal attack. Even though my bills and responsibilities were shared and being taken care of — I felt helpless all the time. Nothing motivated me. Not even the job offers or interviews that landed in my DMs after sharing my side. I didn’t feel settled with taking up just another role. Surprisingly, sharing these learnings and reflecting is what pushed me to build Shoonya.company. What initially felt like a nightmare, turned out to be the thing that pointed me in the right direction. And I saw — that rejection truly is redirection. But I get it, All this will help you get perspective, not a job. For that, please consider: ✅ Bragging about yourself. Go out there on LinkedIn, twitter, Reddit, TikTok and tell the world who you are beyond a job description. • How do you show up at work? Are you a leader? Do you love taking initiatives? • What makes you excited at and beyond work? • What's your story? Talk about your favourite roles in life—a wife, daughter, dad, husband, or son. • Share your work wins and lessons to showcase your expertise. Big or small. Share it. Losing a job doesn't take away your learning curve. So don't shy away. ✅ Asking for help. Network. Network. Network. It's okay to reach out. Ask for help. Look desperate for work; it's okay. (Being passive shows a lack of confidence!) Meet new people and share your experiences. Show your commitment. Tell them what an asset you are. Don't beg, ask. One of my clients recently landed a job offer at Meta. But, three weeks earlier, he was in a dark place… His company announced a new round of layoffs. And he came to our session filled with fear of losing his job. He was exhausted and burned out. And, topping things off, he felt guilty about not completing his tasks for the week. So what did I do? What I DIDN’T do was assign him more work to do. He’d worked really hard. And his efforts paid off with multiple interviews including the one at Meta. But more importantly, piling on more tasks wouldn't have been good for his mental health. So, instead, we addressed his anxiety and fears, revisited his past layoff experiences, and developed practical strategies for dealing with the uncertainty. By the end of the session, he breathed a sigh of relief. He gained an empowered perspective and felt more hopeful about the path ahead. As a coach, I wear many hats. Sometimes, I'm the taskmaster, keeping clients on track. Sometimes, I'm the cheerleader, celebrating their successes. And, at other times, I'm the supportive guide, helping them navigate their struggles to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But one thing stays constant: I love seeing my clients win and helping them get there. Whether that’s getting a new job or just feeling less afraid about the threat of layoffs. 🌟 Embracing Change and Growth 🌟 I wanted to share a personal journey with you all. On May 24, 2023, at 6:40 am, I received that dreaded email from Meta, informing me of my layoff. Losing my job initially brought a sense of relief, not from the layoff itself, but from the constant uncertainty. It was a wakeup call, a push to embrace change and growth (even when we least want that to happen). Now, after four months, I can say the worst is behind me. Today, I share some thoughts and feelings that I went through in the past months. I hope this sharing helps someone going through the same situation. I've gathered some strategies along the way, which I'll be sharing in upcoming articles. Like many at Gfinity and in this industry, I have been impacted by the recent flurry of layoffs that continue to rip through games media. My last day will be the 26th of July, meaning I need to figure out what's next, and as I'm sure many others have, I've considered whether or not this is really for me. I was lucky to avoid layoffs at GGRecon, one of the best places I've enjoyed working, and it caught up with me a few months later - it's hard not to feel like it was always inevitable. I loved my job; I love what I do; it's what I was desperate to do when finishing my studies, and I am lucky to have achieved it. Yet, I also love the idea of being secure, going out for dinner when I fancy it, or an impromptu trip to the pictures without considering if I have a job next month. Then there is the grown-up stuff like saving, building up a pension, or the pipedream that haunts my generation of home ownership. All of the above feels elusive, unlikely, but sometimes even impossible. It's something I need to consider. Since hearing the gutting news my team and I would be let go due to restructuring, I've been sad, lost, disappointed, and even ashamed. The fear of telling my friends and family what's happened has been all-encompassing.  Maybe that's an overreaction; it's certainly not very LinkedIn, but as all things do, these feelings have begun to subside, and now a sense of pride is creeping in. I'm proud because I made a massive step up to Managing Editor at RealSport101, a role I wasn't even sure I was equipped for. Yet, I actually did well. The team took on my ideas, I was there for everyone when needed, and most importantly, it was fun despite the added responsibility and pressures. This has all been a long-winded way of saying I'm looking for work, I'm open to all sorts of opportunities, and maybe it won't be what I was doing before, but that's okay. I'd, of course, love to continue what I was doing, and if there are any opportunities, I'd love to be considered, but the industry is dead competitive, and I'm aware of that. Yet, I have realised I'd take the aforementioned insecurity so long as I get to wake up every morning looking forward to the day. This post probably isn't the only one you've seen today; with layoffs happening all around, I'm merely the most recent person impacted. I will keep an eye out for what's next, and hopefully, I won't have to wait too long. Until then, I will enjoy some time with my wonderfully supportive partner, friends, and my wonderfully strange dog; all I ask is that if you see anything, keep me in mind.

A Message to My Friends and Network: Embrace Opportunity Amidst Challenges To all my friends and LinkedIn network members who have recently been impacted by layoffs, I want to encourage you to take this time as an opportunity for reflection and growth. Amidst the uncertainty, see this as a chance to focus on yourself, your achievements, and your skills. Remember, this is happening for you, not to you. Take a moment to recharge – you've been working tirelessly. Reflect on where you want to be five years from now, what ignites your passion, and what fills you with excitement every morning. Consider your current skills and identify areas for growth or skills that are transferable. Challenge yourself to step out of your comfort zone, take risks, and bet on yourself. I share this with you from personal experience. A year ago, I found myself in your shoes when I was impacted by the layoffs at Meta. Instead of letting it hold me back, I saw it as an opportunity for personal and professional growth. I embraced the challenge, utilized my skills, and embarked on a career pivot. Remember, this journey is about pushing boundaries and embracing change. Don't settle for what you're good at – strive for continuous improvement and embrace the journey. Every day brings new lessons and opportunities for growth. Trust me, when you look back, you'll be immensely proud of how far you've come. Mid-Week Recap 🚀 This week, we're excited to welcome three new dynamic individuals into our Career Catalyst Program. Here's a little about each of them: 1. Client No. 1 🇺🇸 Based in the USA, this client was impacted by the Meta layoffs some time ago and has been job hunting ever since. With a background in GTM, he decided to pivot to the data field after finding that his job applications weren't yielding results. During our sessions, we identified some crucial aspects he was missing. His journey with us begins on Monday, June 10th, and we're eager to see the progress he'll make! 📈 2. Client No. 2 🇬🇧 Hailing from the UK, this young and dynamic individual has worked various unskilled jobs but is currently a BA at a tech startup. He is looking for a more stable, well-paying job that is more technical in nature. Our plan for him includes refining his standout skills, identifying suitable companies, skill development if necessary, crafting a solid job strategy, and prepping him for technical interviews. He starts with us on June 7th! 💼 3. Client No. 3 👩👧👦 A mother of two from England, she took a maternity break at the start of COVID and has struggled to re-enter the job market since. Despite trying many approaches, she hasn't been able to secure interviews. We're starting from scratch with her, retargeting her needs and goals to achieve success together. She begins her journey with us today. 🌟 We typically take on 5-6 clients a month to ensure we can focus on each individual's goals. A few friends have urged me to be more open about a recent professional experience, so here we go… In May 2023, I was laid off from Meta as part of a massive round of layoffs and corporate restructuring across the company. I initially tried to take the news in stride. At that point, I had already taken a leap of faith to better serve my community by launching my campaign for Seattle City Council. But the layoff experience left me with mixed emotions. I was somewhat relieved because it allowed me the opportunity to lean more into my campaign by being a full-time candidate. I also felt a bit privileged to receive a fairly generous severance, particularly compared to what most laid off worker get. That said, I was anxious about how I was going to provide for my family. This feeling was worsened by the fact that I knew that the employer provided health insurance for my family would end on my official termination date in July. As a result, my family had to accelerate some medical care decisions before that occurred. Two of the five people living in my house would end up having mild-to-moderate medical procedures before my insurance ended. As bad as the news was for me personally, I know that layoffs hit differently for other working families struggling to meet their basic needs. Though it’s been 3+ months, I don’t know if I ever fully “processed” the news. For those who have been impacted by layoffs, I see you. I hear you. In many ways, I am you. I know firsthand that the struggle is real. But I take great comfort in knowing that brighter days are ahead.
