Your Wellness Wednesday August 21, 2024 Absorption of Vitamins What is meant by Bioavailable or Bioavailability? This is a term used to describe the degree to which a supplement is actually absorbed by the body so it can be used. There are factors that influence or effect the bioavailability of every supplement you take. Some forms are just more easily absorbed. We discussed pharmaceutical grade supplements that are the best quality and more bioavailable than a lower grade quality. The amount you take at one time is also a factor. If the nutrient is water-soluble, it’s better to take it in divided doses. We discussed this with fat soluble versus water soluble supplements. Fat soluble vitamins should be taken once a day. Water soluble vitamins - since they can leave the body more quickly - should be taken in divided doses twice a day. Food also plays a factor in absorption - as in fat soluble vitamins. Generally, it’s better to take your supplements with a meal. Your natural digestive processes help you to absorb the nutrients. If it’s not possible to take your supplements with food, you should at least take them with a glass of water to help them work properly. Here are my top 6 supplements. Let’s discuss this topic and give some context. 🙂 Supplements are just that. Supplement: something that completes or enhances something when added to it. What do they supplement? Hopefully a Good Nutrition plan, a healthy lifestyle, meaningful strength training, rest, recovery, stress management and sleep hygiene which should be nurtured as well. Still supplements can be helpful and beneficial. The key lies in this truth: There are 2 categories: Essential. And non-essential or novel. What makes something “essential” is that the body has to get it from an outside source. This is where we get the terms essential amino acids or essential fatty acids from. If your body has enough of the building blocks then it can create what it needs within… the non-essential. So with that here are the 5-6 categories of essentials. In no particular order: 1. Essential Amino Acids. (EAAs + Proteins) This is where a high quality protein comes in to help fill in the gaps as many people fall short on daily protein intake. 2. Essential Fatty Acids. (EFAs usually EPA + DHA) typically in the form of fish oil of algae. While not technically “essential” it doesn’t mean they aren’t beneficial. Adding EAAs and Carbs to a heavy training session is a great idea for recovery.
