nstonline Health experts say Malaysia prepared for new wave of Covid-19, emphasize civic duty I convey my opinion on the recent uptick of COVID19 cases amidst the festive seasons to nstonline with Malaysian public health experts. • Vulnerable populations (immunocompromised, elderly who has not been vaccinated, elderly with metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity) are the utmost concern since they are at risk of developing severe symptoms, especially for those who have not received their boosters. • The public, especially those who have family members categorized in the vulnerable group are strongly advised to get their updated booster shots, especially for those has not done so. • Protective efforts can help as well. Excellent talk by Singapore’s minister of health around the challenges and complexity of a country’s healthcare system ranging from economics (principle-agent, supply demand) to social (moral hazard, personal responsibilities). His points on finding the mix between market based (US) and full social based (UK) are highly salient especially in my industry as we strive to make medicines available to all those who need them. One of the most important challenges he raised (relevant to both govt and market access teams in pharma) is how to manage the healthcare “iron triangle” of being affordable, of high quality and accessible. Having seen and experience many healthcare systems across the world, directionally, the focus of Singapore towards preventation (healthy SG), driving personal accountability (eg co payment) and capitation/controls (eg recent cancer cost revisions) seems appropriate but how to manage the emotional element of healthcare and not let the poor fall through the cracks remain a challenge

Taiwan Can Help! 🇹🇼 To establish a comprehensive healthcare system, the World Health Organization (WHO) should include all countries, including Taiwan. This would ensure equitable access to healthcare resources and services for all populations, regardless of geopolitical considerations. By extending coverage to Taiwan, WHO would contribute to the global effort to improve health outcomes and address public health challenges on a truly global scale.

[Policy Recommendations] Recommendation for the Basic Policy on Economic and Fiscal Management and Reform 2024 (June 11, 2024) On June 11, 2024, AMR Alliance Japan (Secretariat: Health and Global Policy Institute) released “Recommendation for the Basic Policy on Economic and Fiscal Management and Reform 2024” to promote infectious disease control measures combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The content of the recommendations was as follows. "In addressing antimicrobial resistance, in addition to promoting the One Health Approach, Japan should promote discussion on and implement steps to secure the supply of therapeutics as well as encourage research and development through market incentives, through collaboration among industry, academia, government, and citizens.
