🙂 Jemma Stephenson reports: The Alabama Community College System has signed a contract to provide more mental health services to students. Neil Scott, vice chancellor of student success, said to the Alabama Community College System’s Board of Trustees that mental health has been a growing concern among their colleges. “If we’re going to continue to be laser focused on student success, it’s going to require us to look beyond a student’s academic experience.” Ebony Horton Bradley, a spokeswoman for the college, said they were still working out details of the contract with the colleges. The services include a 24/7 crisis hotline that will be answered by a licensed counselor. Another component is scheduled mental health telehealth #counseling services that students do not pay for. He said that they were able to sign the contract at a lower cost at the system level. Scott said they signed the contract with a company earlier this summer to provide services beginning in the fall. “Maybe they want to speak with a counselor who has the same race or the same gender as them and they can put in those demographic information to be able to select a counselor that really meets their needs,” he said. The third component is an online wellness hubs, which includes self-help media and content.  “Maybe it’s just around exam time and they want to watch a video about managing stress during exam times or maybe it’s managing anxiety during holidays, when they’re going to be around family more or maybe it’s something as simple as yoga or meditation or just managing interpersonal relationships,” he said. #StudentMentalHealth #TeenMentalHealth #CollegeCounseling #MentalHealth #counselors #Alabama #CommunityColleges #psychotherapists

Yesterday I attended the work conference for student wellbeing hosted by the ECIO | Expertisecentrum inclusief onderwijs and the Trimbos-instituut. I always like days like this, as they remind me of how many people are working towards the same goal, and why this #goal (to improve #studentwellbeing ) is so important. 💡   One of the things that was presented during yesterday’s conference was the '2023 Monitor for Mental Health and Substance use' amongst students in the Netherlands. Although these results cannot be generalised to all students, they do provide a lot of valuable input into how students are doing in different areas.   📊 For example, something that stuck with me was the fact that over 50% of the respondent population experiences high stress, pressure to perform, emotional exhaustion, and loneliness. The most frequent reason for experiencing stress was study related. Other factors that contributed to poorer wellbeing included societal issues and online behaviour (i.e., social media use or gaming habits).   🤲 What was also interesting to see is that having a social support network, and enough time to relax and recover were positive predictors for wellbeing.   These results do not surprise me, but they do make two things clear:   1. The wellbeing of young adults is a growing societal issue, and it is something we need to address together on all levels - from politics to our individual behaviour. 🙌   2.
