Everyone loves the Aldi UK banter with Marks and Spencer as a running joke from the Colin battle. From a marketing perspective it’s genius and I do admit it’s very funny. But I’m conflicted about Aldi as a whole. You see, barely anyone talks about how Aldi have flipped the switch and are actively disregarding small brands trademarks and copying their creatives too. Take a look at this video from Pleese https://lnkd.in/e5Dvjk5m Exact same name and strapline in the same flavor profiles too. Now playing the underdog to M&S and acting like the quirky challenger brand is a great vibe if its authentic. But when they then go onto play Goliath and shit on tiny start ups with 5 employees by stealing their intellectual property - it all seems rather disingenuous. It’s certainly got me thinking on the ethics around dupes and disparity in acceptance between ripping off large vs small brands. But then, I’ve never really understood dupes and fake culture. To me it feels like you’re cheating yourself if you buy a knockoff. I’d rather just have less and buy the real thing. Probably explains why I was team Colin during the first fall out… What do you think? 🤔 #branding #intellectualproperty #marketing #brandidentity #trademark

How many distributors are like: Ikea and Aldi that keep innovating deeper ways to reduce costs, then prices? 1. Some news items: a. 4/22: Kroger to divest 166 stores to enable Albertson merger: needed to fight low-price competitors (like Aldi, Lidl, Costco, Walmart) b. 5/2: Aldi announces lower prices on 250+ SKUs. c. 5/8: Ikea announces 2nd global price cuts on thousands of SKUs 2. This article reveals how every aspect of Aldi’s business model has lower-cost innovations which affords: price cuts; profits; and expansion. 3. Whereas: Kroger & Albertson are pursuing bigger versions of their traditional model. (Recall how the K-Mart and Sears merger worked?) 4. With both customer and SKU net-profit analytics (from https://lnkd.in/g3WPKkPM) hidden cross-subsidies amongst customers and SKUs are revealed. What - curious, smart, innovative - distributor(s) will figure out how to rethink their service models to steal cream, Customer/SKU business from “full-service” (standard, static) distributors?

*Cinnabon waving to all of the brands carrying their product.* The incomparable Cinnabon has quietly become one of the most popular and prolific brands in food through strategic partnerships + collaborations... seems like everybody wants a piece of that bon! ✨ + Subway + The Wendy's Company + Taco Bell + Applebee's Grill & Bar + Pizza Hut + Numerous retail / CPG collabs There's been a lot of talk about whether or not this kind of "cross-pollination" in the food industry can be mutually beneficial... But, in a world where driving new traffic (vs. retaining loyalists) is a primary objective for most, unexpected partnerships like these are a smart way to tap new markets/consumers. And as for benefits to Cinnabon? They hover around 700 units but their potential footprint - thanks to smart collabs like these - is closer to 44,000... Making them *officially* the most popular snack in town. 👑 Any predictions on where they'll go next? 👇

Aldi is in trouble again over the perceived similarity its private label bears to other recognised brands. This time it’s UK-based cider business, Thatchers, which has taken umbrage to the resemblance of Aldi’s ‘Taurus Cloudy Cider’ with its own ‘Thatcher’s Cloudy Lemon Cider’. Only last year Colin the Caterpillar shook hands with rival Cuthbert in a resolution of the supermarket cake wars. I was reflecting on where a CMO job spec becomes blurred between creative licence and pushing the boundaries? Aldi have clearly given its marketing and brands team some licence and feel it’s worth the lawyers’ fees for the publicity. So do we think it’s fair game for the German retailer? ∙ Aldi – an unintended coincidence? ∙ Thatcher’s – protect your brand? ∙ Or let’s crack on and sell more cider? #retail #cmos #retailers --------------------------------------------------------------- 👋 I’m Guy, founder of BartonRock Executive Search 👉 I help consumer & retail businesses hire key senior executives and advise them on people & hiring strategy 🗞️ Sign up for my newsletter Scaling Success 🔔 Tap the bell to get notified

Specialist: Increasing Profits & Multiple | Reducing business & team dependency on Owners | Increasing Value to meet Owner’s Wealth Req | Exit without Earn-Out.
Feb20's 'Rich Thinking' was inspired by Cadbury UK Creme Eggs! Sainsbury's were 35p each and Tesco's were 50p each or 3 for £1.00. Who wins and why? The challenge with discounting is that you have to increase your volume of sales to maintain your profits – and often by significantly more than most people think. For example, if your margin is 40% and you reduce your price by just 10% you will need your sales volume to increase by 33% to maintain your gross profit. That's expecting a small price reduction to incentivise a lot more sales – would/does it? How well do you understand your numbers to be able to calculate the increased sales volume that you will need for the discount you are offering? How well trained in Sales are you and your team to then sell that increased amount? And, importantly, wrt to Creme Eggs, how do you eat yours? To learn more about how this will help you and your business, please get in touch today. And, as always, your thoughts, comments and questions are very welcome and please do share this - with whoever you think would get value from it - and to connect for more great content, all the very best, Rich.
