Speaking to Joe who is committed to UCONN⚽️, left me so much more impressed than I could’ve imagined. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐲… When I heard from Jeff Grossman he gave me a good humble run down of his sons journey too committing too University of Connecticut for soccer. Here’s the thing. I’m lucky enough to work with a lot of young athletes. Every journey truly is different. Thats what makes it special. 𝐉𝐨𝐞’𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞. He’s a High School student who when offered the opportunity to leave home and play his senior year of High School in Miami, he jumped on it. The decision was a tough and stressful one for a 17 year old kid. He highlighted how important his support system was in being there for him. Imaging leaving home, friends, family. By your own choice. In High School. Everything he’s ever known. So I had to ask, 𝑾𝒉𝒚?  His answer is where it started to become obvious to me on why he was successful already and WILL be moving forward. Joe talked about understanding the importance of accepting challenges. To get where he wants to be. He realizes that his opportunity to maximize his potential is now. That starts with competing against the best of the best. With Joe’s willingness to never give up, whether that means overcoming injuries, throwing himself into the top competition, accepting an offer to compete right away at a Big East Soccer program. He’s up for it. One of my favorite quotes from our talk was “ This is my goal, Im going to get it no matter what. Just let me go and do it.” For anyone going through this process or with children hoping to play at the next level. 🎧Take a listen to Joe. He’s a great example of what it takes to get there. Remember that awesome feeling you had?🏆 You have had successes in your life that have impacted who you are today. It may have been a Championship, earning a position you were seeking, acing that test, earning your first paid speaking engagement or landing your TedX. We ALL have had INCREDIBLE experiences in our lives at some point in time. One of those moments for me was competing with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Soccer team when we earned Big 12 Conference Regular and Tournament Championships. That team was very special. The feeling I had in this picture was one that I pull from when I want to feel UNSTOPPABLE. I remember when I was goalkeeper for this amazing team. I knew before I would go in that I was going to stop anyone that came into my 18 yard box. I decided before the game even started. It was my mission to not let goals in and be all I could be for my teammates. Whenever I need to feel UNSTOPPABLE I go back to my memories of when I felt that way. I feel it with all my senses. I can feel that CHAMPIONSHIP🏆. I can remember how that meal celebrating with my team tasted. I can see how my coaches looked at me. I remember my teammates hugs and how they felt. I can FEEL how cold it was in that day we won that Championship in 32 degree weather in St. Louis. I can hear the parents cheering. When I go back to past successes it makes me feel it all over again. It changes my state. I become INVINCIBLE and STRONG. Since then: - Won 71% of her games - 11 regular season titles - 10 conference tournament titles - 3x National Coach of the Year But it's never been about her... 7 powerful things she told me I'll never forget: On hiring: "To be great, you have to surround yourself with people who are great & fill the areas you don't do as well" On feedback: "You have to be willing to listen to others who will give you an honest assessment" On preparation: "We're not going to show up to practice without a plan" On constantly growing: "Our goal is to *not* get comfortable" On enabling others to lead: "If you come into our gym, you'll hear lots of different voices [not just mine]" On mentors: "When I got hired, our AD paid Terry Petit [former Nebraska coaching legend] to mentor me...I was a young coach, not ready for this gig, & Creighton paid someone so they'd be fully invested in the program...I can't tell you how valuable that was" On consistency: "Our consistency is because our staff is consistent in what we do. Ever had a plan that didn’t go exactly as expected? This week, after hurting my back playing tennis, I found myself at a crossroads: ➜Should I sit out or push through? On Saturday, I decided to test the waters with a 1.5-mile run. ➜Despite the pain, I managed to show up for the 6th USATF-NE race in the series, determined to hold onto my 4th place standing in the highly competitive 45-49 age group. What did I learn? 1️⃣ It’s not always about pushing yourself to the limit. Sometimes, it’s about pacing yourself, knowing when to step back, and finding value in supporting others along the way. 2️⃣ Even though I wasn’t at my best, I knew it was important to show up for my team. There’s something powerful about being there, contributing in any way you can, and reinforcing that sense of community and commitment. What did I do? ➜ Instead of racing hard, I chose to enjoy the roads with friends and teammates. It wasn’t just about the competition this time; it was about being part of the team and the experience. In our professional lives, we often focus on the next goal or milestone. But sometimes, the most meaningful progress comes when we step back, show up for the team, embrace the journey, and lift others up.
