Insights from a Round Table Discussion: Empowering Women in IT and Digitalization I am excited to share that I participated in a thought-provoking round table discussion at Microsoft today with Joacim Damgard Ingrid Heschl Julia Katovsky Doris Lippert centered on the initiative #shegoesdigital which supports gender diversity in IT and digitalization. #RHIMagnesita is one of the companies participating in the 2nd round, under the patronage of Austrian First Lady Doris Schmidauer. Participants passionately discussed the need to break down stereotypes that often deter women from pursuing careers in IT. By showcasing successful female role models and challenging preconceived notions, we can create an inclusive environment that encourages more women to join and thrive in the industry. The round table highlighted the significance of educational initiatives that promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) subjects among girls from an early age. Encouraging girls to pursue these fields can address the gender gap and ensure a pipeline of talented women in IT and digitalization. Advocacy for gender diversity and visibility of women's achievements in IT and digitalization were underscored as critical components. Amplifying success stories and recognizing the contributions of women in the industry can inspire others and challenge existing norms. Today we celebrate International Women's and Girls' Day in Science! On this 2024 International Women's and Girls' Day in Science, we stand at the intersection of possibility and progress. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields are not just domains of discovery; they are pathways to empowerment and equity. In the words of UN Women, "Science, technology, and innovation continue to radically and rapidly transform how people live, socialize, pay their bills, order food, study, and work." For women and girls worldwide, this transformation offers both unprecedented opportunities and challenges. We are inspired by stories like Natacha Sangwa's, a young graduate from Rwanda who attended a coding camp supported by UN Women. Through her ingenuity and the power of technology, she developed a prototype to combat climate change in her community. Her determination to increase the representation of women and girls in technology exemplifies the spirit of progress we champion at Women AI Academy. However, despite these strides, women remain significantly underrepresented in STEM fields, constituting only 29.2% of all STEM workers globally. Hostile work environments and pervasive discrimination hinder their career advancement and retention. Yet, there is hope. Partnerships and engagement are key to addressing these challenges. At Women AI Academy, we are committed to fostering inclusive corporate cultures, eliminating stereotypes, and advocating for policies that attract, retain, and promote women in STEM. As we approach the UN's Summit of the Future this fall, we urge the global community to prioritize action. Let us seize every opportunity to dismantle barriers, counter bias, and support the bright minds shaping our future. Together, let's fulfill science's promise for gender equality. Despite national conversations about the lack of diversity in tech, women are disproportionally missing out on the ongoing boom in IT jobs. While women make up 47% of all employed adults in the US, as of 2022, they hold only 28% of computing and mathematical roles, according to data from Zippia, with women identifying as Asian or Pacific Islander making up just 7% of the IT workforce and Black and Hispanic women accounting for 3% and 2%, respectively*. 🔍 Leadership Roles: Women hold just 25% of senior leadership roles in technology companies, as found by McKinsey & Company. This is lower than in many other sectors, indicating that gender disparity persists at the highest levels. 📚 STEM Education: The gender gap starts early, with women earning only 19% of bachelor’s degrees in computer and information sciences. This educational disparity significantly impacts the pipeline of women entering the IT workforce.
