TRE is one of the most efficient & effective ways to prevent PTSD & Burnout. When given the opportunity to experience it First Responders love TRE because it provides them with a body-based tool to physically release stress & tension so they can switch off hypervigilance & improve their sleep, mental health & relationships. It's cost effectively learnt in group trainings & because it's being used by elite athletes & soldiers it's stigma free & performance focused. Once learnt TRE is a resource for life & offers significantly different wellbeing approach to mindfulness, yoga & counselling because it doesn't take mental focus, physical effort or the need to recall or talk about the past. This makes it much more likely to be used after critical incidents & when personnel are most exhausted & least likely to use more demanding self-care techniques. As we are learning more about the horrific murder of Sonya Massey, it becomes clear that that she was suffering through a mental health crisis. The day before her mom called the police to ask the police to not send any “combative policeman that are prejudiced.” This is a very scary reality for anyone calling the police for a mental health crisis. It’s especially dangerous for black and brown people. I get 3rd party calls on 988 nearly every day from people concerned about their loved ones and trying to find them help. Having armed officers overloaded with the real stresses of their job show up creates the potential for a dangerous situation- one that can be avoided. There are Psychiatric Evaluation Screenings (PES) in New York and New Jersey, but it’s not everywhere and it should be. Mental health is like any other disease, if you don’t get treatment it will keep getting worse until 911 may be your only option and you roll the dice. When you are struggling with the internal dialogue, with controlling your feelings- call 988, try therapy, support groups, talking with friends and loved ones- what’s going on in your head matters. Our criminal legal system historically looks for failure, blows the whistle at people, and expects perfection -- even from people who are struggling with mental health disorders, substance use disorders, and poverty. We can no longer punish people into behavior change. Refereeing people out of crime doesn't work. We need Coaches! Coaches are staff who invest in people, support them when they're struggling, and celebrate progress. Coaches are energized by helping people improve themselves and deeply connected to this outcome.
