Sharks limit the abundance of their prey, which then affects the prey of those animals and so on in the chain, whereby sharks directly or indirectly affect all levels of the food chain and help maintain the structure of healthy ocean ecosystems. Although our sea is not as big as the world's oceans, the Adriatic is home to many marine species, including sharks. Spurred on by a conversation over at Basecamp: Outdoor Jobs, Freelance Gigs, Networking over on the face space, a few thoughts on the outdoor industry in the Midwest.... What is an #OutdoorIndustry job? Are there really fewer of them in the #midwest? While it is true there are not a lot of major human powered related brands that have facilities here--there are outdoor industry jobs in the Midwest. Many of these jobs and places, have been overlooked by larger brands and outdoor media. Until I wanted to move to the Midwest, I would not have thought of #parksandrecreation or #forestry like we do at Friends of Grand Rapids Parks or a #canoelivery as 'outdoor industry' but why not? There's a cultural gap that is both foisted upon and embraced by too many in the Midwest that any outdoor activity here is just preparing you to 'do it for real' somewhere 'out there'. Some of our homegrown brands don't do any, or enough of their editorial work in the Midwest which fuels a lack of effective representation in the outdoor media ecosystem. But we have awesome trails! We have multi-day adventures by #canoe or #kayak or #bike, or #hike. There's incredible #fishing and great #hunting. We've got spots of white water, we've got RV and boat manufacturers, brands like Carhartt, Paddle North, and Wolverine Worldwide. We have plenty of summer camps, specialty retailers, regional, county and urban conservation organizations, and a growing community of entrepreneurship. Ski areas took it in the shorts these last two winters, but that's still hanging on... You may need to not look harder, but look differently in the Midwest to find outdoor industry jobs...but they are here. Like I said earlier in the post, some of it is the people in our states self-selecting out of the national conversation as well as others leaving us out of the conversation, but that does not mean it isn't changing, can't change faster with your leadership, or that those jobs are not here--they 100% are. Come and visit! I know we've got city leadership from western states swinging by to see if they can't catch some of our magic here in Grand Rapids! On winter time satellite imagery as a global layer (or covering all the major mountain ranges): One of the biggest obstacles here is cost of the data acquisition. If the imagery was available low-loud cover, high resolution, then the other problem is that the mass majority of it in places like the Colorado Rockies, the Tien Shan, the Swiss Alps... is rural or uninhabited space. Similar to imagery over the ocean, it's part of the "imaging the whole planet every day/week/month" type of dataset. But the cost per square kilometer will be on par with imagery covering the UK, Miami, Japan, etc. Quite high priced! 5x4 km probably $600 let's say. It seems to me that satellite imagery has this issue where sometimes a vast amount of landscape is imaged, then a tiny % of the individual tiles is able to be sold to recoup costs and aim to be profitable. That or a full dataset is sold, but of course only a minority of it is the most useful. The imagery which is not sold is not often discounted to try to achieve a more attractive price. Price depends on resolution, not value of the "real estate". When "mining" the earth for information and imagery, why not highly value the golden nuggets (areas of strong interest) and discount the dirt and silt that are byproducts? I believe the answer is because value emerges later, you don't want to discount middle of nowhere imagery that doesn't get regularly purchase in case somebody comes up with a suddenly strong interest in it where they are willing to pay a high price today, despite yesterday not being interested.
