Meet the true waste hero – Umi Tutik 🌟, the champion of Bank Sampah Budi Luhur. It was an honor to hear about her journey in empowering the community since 2014. Umi Tutik shared several crucial insights into behavior change for waste management: Tailored Approaches: Waste management isn't one-size-fits-all. Its implementation varies based on the unique challenges of each area. Understanding the specific needs of a target community is essential, rather than imposing a universal method 🌍♻️ Patience, Honesty, and Trust: Everyone is capable of change, but it takes time to recognize the urgency of waste segregation. Umi’s motto, "SaJuTa" (patience, honesty, and trust), highlights the importance of these qualities in fostering lasting behavioral change ⏳🤝 Community Involvement: Instead of prescribing waste segregation methods, involve people in the discussion. This approach allows them to develop their own strategies that suit their living environments, enhancing the sustainability of these practices. Umi's method has successfully transformed initially resistant individuals into active participants 🗣️💡 We need more individuals like Umi Tutik in Indonesia. Returning to the Bantar Gebang landfill after 7 years, it's disheartening to see the situation has not gotten better. The waste pile now mountains as high as an 18-story building, underscoring the severity of our nation's waste management challenges. Witnessing the problem firsthand made this journey even more daunting, but I'm grateful to be here with the Sirsak team Violy Purnamasari Lie Mangkusatya Janice Alberta Yasmin Athirah, whom are dedicated to transform 3,000 organizations by 2030 and revolutionize the waste value chain. We hope that in 6-7 years, we can look back and take pride in the journey we've embarked on. Thank you Indonesia National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP) World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia for having me as one of the reviewers for Plastic Innovation Solution Showcase today. It was inspiring to witness the impactful innovations presented by these visionary minds. Congratulations to the following six innovators who are driving significant change: 1. Repax : Offering sustainable packaging-as-a-service for e-commerce businesses 2. Tradisi: Providing a digital platform for waste banks and fostering behavior change within communities, including in Islamic boarding schools 3. Net Free Seas: an initiative by Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), focusing on collection and recycling of abandoned, lost, discarded fishing gear (ALDFG), also known as ghost gear 4. KIBUMI : Providing end-to-end recyclable material sourcing while empowering traditional junk shops to become more efficient and generate greater value 5. RiverRecycle : Recovering and recycling low-value plastics from marine environments, including the notoriously polluted Citarum River 6. Duitin Indonesia : Leveraging its digital app to conduct multilayer (MLP) collection and recycling, with a focus on creating green and affordable housing I'm eagerly anticipating further progress of each innovation and am enthusiastic about potential future collaborations! One of the most common remarks I encounter when discussing sustainability initiatives is the perception that "sustainability is a source of cost." Is this true? Short answer: yes. Just like any business venture or project, embarking on sustainability efforts requires investment—whether it's in the form of time, capital, or expertise. There are resources that must be allocated to enact meaningful change. However, does sustainability yield returns and other benefits? Again, the answer is a resounding yes. Consider this simple yet illustrative example: A school with 1000 students decides to embrace the concept of a green school. By making an initial investment of $11,000 and implementing changes in standard operating procedures (SOP), the school manages to divert 32.4 tons of waste from landfills, produce 3.2 tons of fertilizers, and save $37,382 annually. While numerous variables come into play, this case underscores how sustainability initiatives can yield tangible benefits beyond environmental stewardship. It's time to shift our perspective on sustainability—from viewing it solely as an expense to recognizing it as an investment in our people, planet, and prosperity. #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #PositiveChange #YoungChamps

“Green” has become a ubiquitous buzzword, often used as an adjective to portray an image of eco-friendliness for companies, buildings, and schools alike. But what does it truly mean to be “green,” and does simply adding some green ornaments to your office lobby or organizing a beach cleanup make your company genuinely environmentally responsible? 🤔 Let’s delve deeper into this concept: 1. Start with Design 💼 Sustainability encompasses both vertical and horizontal dimensions within ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices. Vertically, it involves creating products or innovations directly aimed at addressing environmental challenges, such as carbon capture or e-waste recycling technologies. Meanwhile, horizontally, it entails reevaluating how businesses operate, including embracing sharing economy models. Has your company adopted either this vertical or horizontal approach? 2. Assess Operations 🏭 Every aspect of a company’s value chain impacts the environment and society. Resources should be sourced sustainably, processes must be designed to minimize environmental harm, and employees should be educated on responsible operations and waste management practices. 3. Consider End-of-Life ♻️ Sustainability doesn’t end with product distribution; it extends to the management of post-consumer waste. Embracing principles of the circular economy, like those advocated by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, entails eliminating waste and its associated pollution. This means responsibly managing the end-of-life phase of products. True sustainability isn’t achieved through ad-hoc efforts or mere certifications. It requires a conscious, concerted commitment from companies to rethink their entire business approach—from design and operations throughout the value chain to end-of-life considerations.
