Kaiser Permanente Northern California Residency and Fellowship Programs hosts an annual two-week Resident Elective in Health Policy for our residents and fellows. The course is designed to orient our residents and fellows to the fast-changing world of health policy, increase their knowledge of key health policy issues facing their community and the nation, and prepare them to be effective physician-leaders and advocates in a systems-based practice. Participants of the Elective in Health Policy: Learn key aspects of U.S. health policy; Participate in intensive virtual seminars with policy experts in health disparities, health economics, public health, quality improvement, value-based care, and other fields; Understand their roles and opportunities within the local, state, and national health policy landscape; Apply policy analysis, assessment and recommendations to real-world challenges by completing a group capstone project in health policy; Translate their knowledge into practice; Disseminate the information learned with their colleagues. The newly established Institute for Healthcare Access, a collaboration between the Texas A&M Health Science Center, #TAMUMedicine, and the Texas A&M University School of Law, is determined to identify barriers to care and explore solutions that advance health, especially within underserved communities in Texas. Executive Director Keegan Warren says, "Our mission is to establish the preeminent forum to challenge conventional thinking about barriers to access to health care. We will engage stakeholders, inspire decision-makers and generate breakthrough advances that improve health - and people's lives." California is pioneering a new era of collaborative care, breaking down barriers in service delivery through tailored approaches that meet whole-person needs with coordinated efforts. Strategic consent management is the key to unlocking the future of collaborative care. An informed consent approach with standardized forms can facilitate medical, behavioral health, and social service information sharing amid a restrictive patchwork of federal and state laws. We believe consent management is critical to get the right information to the right people at the right time to ultimately enhance service delivery and improve health outcomes. Based on interviews with over 20 industry experts supplemented by additional literature review and research, this paper outlines the components required to expand consent management services from county-level pilot trials to a full-scale statewide information exchange. How to improve patient trust in health systems? This is a critical issue in today's US healthcare system. Last Friday, @Madeline Ashley published a paper on the link between medical mistrust and health literacy. Mistrust stems from historical events that, unfortunately, are still occurring today. Issues such as medical discrimination, cultural bias, and communication barriers contribute to this ongoing problem. It's time to address these challenges head-on. Dr. House's famous quote, "Patients always lie," highlights a concerning perspective within the health system. Overcoming this lack of trust starts with acknowledging also this narrative. I’ve been advocating that building trust begins with improving health literacy. Thank you, Madeline Ashley, for shedding light on this issue, and to the visionary CEOs speaking out on the impact of health literacy on medical mistrust.
