Alfred Ombudo K'Ombudo It is indeed encouraging to see Kenyan-branded coffee making its way to international markets such as Starbucks in Berlin. This is a testament to the high quality of our coffee and the dedication of all stakeholders involved in this journey. However, significant challenges remain that we must address to fully capitalize on this potential: Ownership and Profits: Many large coffee farms in Kenya are owned by foreign entities. This means a substantial portion of the profits from our premium coffee does not benefit local farmers and the Kenyan economy as it should. Aging Infrastructure: The coffee industry is hindered by outdated farming practices and infrastructure. There is a pressing need for investment in modern agricultural techniques and the rejuvenation of aging coffee trees to boost productivity and quality. Domestic Market Paradox: While we export high-quality coffee, the domestic market is saturated with lower-quality imports. Promoting local consumption and ensuring that Kenyans have access to our best coffee is crucial. Fair Trade Practices: Ensuring that farmers receive fair compensation for their produce is vital. Many smallholder farmers still struggle with low prices and limited access to international markets. Addressing these challenges will require concerted efforts from both the government and the private sector. By investing in local farmers, improving infrastructure, and promoting fair trade, we can enhance the sustainability and profitability of Kenya’s coffee industry.

Today, we are debuting the Blackbird Breakfast Club, a Blackbird Labs, Inc. platform pass that gets a limited number of lucky members free coffee drinks and breakfast time benefits at some of our favorite New York City joints, like Fairfax, Spring Cafe Aspen, and Gertie (with others to be announced soon!). There has been a lot of talk about restaurant clubs lately. Memberships are dropping like mad, and at places we might not expect, like Taco Bell and PF Chang’s. The fever has made its way to the independent restaurant world, too, ranging from very premium offerings like Carbone Privato, an actual club with a $20,000 initiation fee and $10,000 annual dues, to more everyday fun, like Francie, a great little place in Williamsburg that has just dropped a “membership”, which includes a quarterly $500 credit and VIP reservations access. The Breakfast Club is spread across six venues so far (we are announcing other partner restaurants soon), and the idea of us bundling these six places in an affinity lane is, we think, of note. While it is true that having a club mentality can benefit a certain type of venue (see: The Unifying Theory of Restaurants), we also think it is extremely risky for the average restaurant to outwardly declare itself a club. They lack the scale of a PF Chang’s, first; second, saying ‘no’ is generally experts-only terrain. It’s why even a place like Gjelina, which has tons of scale relative to most other restaurants, and a brand that sizzles, isn’t thinking about their Friends & Family program as a membership program, so much as just a way to encourage their community to stay engaged. But people like memberships, being in the club. So, as we think about what we can do for both the Blackbird audience and our restaurant partners, we are excited about programs like the Breakfast Club. Coffee, pizza, cocktails, Soho, omakase, and so many more. These are the restaurant clubs of the future: passion—not place—driven, offering access and benefits to many. Bit of a self indulgent post 😅 When we think about growth and development, we can sometimes forget to pause and reflect on our own journeys. I have been reflecting a lot about my own journey, specifically my coffee journey recently, and how it has helped me grow in so many other ways. 6 years ago, I joined Starbucks as a completely "Green Bean", knowing not a thing about coffee. I couldn't steam milk, didnt know what a tasting note was and was all together clueless about coffee. My confidence was very low, and I found it incredibly daunting trying to fit into new teams. However, I was lucky enough to join a team of incredibly passionate, knowledgeable, and welcoming partners who embraced me and taught me all they could. I was encouraged to sign up to the barista competition after a few months, and to no one's surprise, I was knocked out first round. However, I could look at that and hold my head high knowing that a few months earlier I wouldn't have had the confidence to even consider signing up. This lit a whole new passion in me and a drive to continue growing. Each year that the competition opened from then on, I signed up straight away. The next competition I went 1 step further and the following competition made it to state runner up. Fast forward to last week, I get the opportunity to compete against 2 extremely talented, knowledgeable, and inspiring partners in the National Finals and ended up placing 2nd for the country. This achievement is one I am extremely proud of, and to think, just few years earlier I was making milk squeal every attempt to now being able to do latte art in front of a massive crowd. Upon reflection, I keep going back to a few values that I have tried to maintain throughout these years. The first being to follow my passion & share it. Once I was introduced to coffee, I was in love and knew that this was where I wanted to go with my career and has also given me so many opportunities I never thought I would experience. But I also knew I wanted to create this same passion and joy for others. The next is to embrace failing by learning and growing from it. Without giving the competition a go every year, and seeing the growth year on year gave me such a drive to continually build on this, I'm not sure I would be where I am now. The last is to connect with others, even if it pushes you outside of your comfort zone. I have had so many people be a part of my journey over the years and couldn't have made it to where I am today without each of them. I hope to continue learning more and more, but very excited to see where the journey will lead me in the future 😁 #tobeapartner #limitlesspossibilities #starbucksaustralia
