Join me in LA November 6-9 for a CTO Design Challenge: “Plan A” for Global Solar at Future in Review conference. I would like discuss what are the technological, regulatory, policy and market hurdle to rapidly deploy solar? We are rapidly crossing a point of no return. If humanity is to survive the next century, it is imperative that we stop greenhouse gas emissions. Not in 30 years, not in 10, but In 5. This year’s FiRe CTO Challenge puts the participants on the front lines of our fight for survival. There are many potential ways to tackle climate change – but this year, we focus on the only one that can be deployed immediately, affordably, and at scale. 🌎 How has Climate Tech fared since Q2 2024 began? Our observations and analysis for climate tech within the last 30 days continue to reinforce the conclusions we’ve put forth over the last quarter. To put this all together, we’ve written an article to update you on the latest trends and highlights we’ve observed since the start of Q2 2024, which you can access here: https://lnkd.in/dT_sXMxP Here’s a high-level update of some of the things we saw: 📌 Over $4.8 billion in funding has so far been recorded across 350 deals. Notably, equity deals have been the prime focus, recording 84% of this total, while non-dilutive funding trails at 16%. 📌 Despite fluctuations, early-stage funding remains robust, maintaining pace with Q1 averages. However, it's the later-stage companies that have shown resilience, seeing 167% growth in funding compared to the previous month. Noteworthy deals are Pine Gate Renewables' $650m and Nexamp’s $520m capacity expansion-focused growth-equity rounds. 📌 North America leads Europe in funding for the first time this year (on a month-per-month basis), but Europe continues to be the region that makes the most deals. 📌 Acquisitions continue to rise amidst non-existent IPOs. Most climate reporting just digs the hole deeper. If you want to know true despair, read a half-dozen or so of the articles from a few weeks ago about John Podesta. Carrying a purse that contains $369 billion, Podesta is the single mist important person in the world when it comes to energy policy and climate. Yet not a single article I read had any clue who Podesta was, what his history was. So the fact that emissions are skyrocketing while so many happy people celebrate wins in renewable energy never leads back to the Podesta and how exactly he is allocating these riches. And then there is Drilled Media, where adults hang out: "...It’s an interesting time in the planet-saving tech world. After the pandemic, capital investments in clean tech skyrocketed in 2021 and 2022, only to fall significantly in 2023. The Biden administration’s policies, particularly the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, unleashed a wealth of new funding, making some climate tech investments much more attractive for investors who can count on government funds to help support their cash bets... "Despite the genial corporate blandness of the conference, cleantech is not a normal industry, but a sector that has been conjured up out of an urgent global call to action. This is a sector that has benefited from the Bill Gates and Al Gores of the world promoting its progress and potentials; a sector that has been highlighted and uplifted as a reason for climate hope as government action has lagged... "Yet, walking around the conference, you could hardly tell that we’re running out of time. Mentions of 1.5 degrees and 2 degrees were few and far between, as were discussions of any UN proceedings or the need to phase out fossil fuels..." The world stands at a pivotal point on the journey to #netzero. Investing in ClimateTech solutions is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the effects of climate change. A recent report from Allianz Economic Research throws a light on the current investment gaps facing European ClimateTech start-ups, threatening an innovation lag behind the U.S. and China. Strong partnerships between public and private investors are key to reversing this course and improving the competitiveness of Europe’s ClimateTech industry. Policymakers can help to establish a unified EU platform, streamline bureaucracy, and update regulation. Closer collaboration is also needed between investors and universities, to build robust research ecosystems, catalyse innovation and fast-track ClimateTech innovation hubs.   Although our report focuses on Europe, the ClimateTech race is global. The economic opportunity in the net-zero transformation is enormous and progress from around the world continues to impress me, from rapid advances in making renewable energy accessible and affordable to groundbreaking policies that are helping communities adapt to living with climate risks. It was great to talk #NZIA and #cleantech #investment with Kira Taylor for her new podcast The Jolt at FORESIGHT Climate & Energy (subscribe to it, it's a great bi-weekly digest) As more details come out about the recent Net-Zero Industry Act agreement, it's becoming clear that some of the initial ambition of the file has been pared back, and that the "strategic" list of clean technologies to industrialise by 2030 has become a catch-all, even including some early-stage technologies that are nowhere close to commercialisation. Unfortunately, if everything is a strategic priority, nothing is a strategic priority. What remains? Indicative domestic manufacturing targets, some laudable progress on permitting, early ideas for improving public procurement and regulatory sandboxes, and good support for re-skilling. It's a good base to build on. What's missing? Clear funding mechanisms to meet our ambitions. Instead, we get a new lasagna of categories, labels and seals without hard euros next to them. Urgently needed to build on this first step ---> a Cleantech Investment Plan for European competitiveness, mobilising hundreds of billions of euros of private capital with smart de-risking tools like public guarantees and first-loss mechanisms, as proposed by Cleantech for Europe “If you want to become the home of clean tech manufacturing, you need three things. You need a regulatory context with a clear stance on permitting and on procurement […], then you need a clear industrial strategy for which sectors you want to lead in and how to deploy manufacturing in these sectors.
